Herndon was off to a nice start last season before suffering an elbow injury that eventually led to Tommy John surgery. He began throwing in October and is expected to miss at least the first few months of the 2013 season. He was waived by the Phillies in the offseason and was claimed by the Yankees after a short stay on the Blue Jays' roster. He could join the Yankees' bullpen mid-season, but doesn't figure to see anything more than a middle relief role.
Herndon spent the majority of last season with the Phillies working in low-leverage relief situations. He posted solid numbers but benefited from a .270 BABIP as well. Herndon relies heavily on his sinker though he was able to increase his K/9IP to an acceptable level last season. He still has some work to do on cutting back on his walks, but he has the tools to be a successful middle reliever. He'll compete for a relief job this spring, but may spend more time at Triple-A after failing to make the Phillies' postseason roster in October.
The Phillies grabbed Herndon from the Angels in last year's Rule 5 Draft and kept him on their roster all season. Herndon posted decent numbers for the Phils working primarily in a mop-up role. He isn't a strikeout pitcher and instead relies on his sinker to get outs on the ground. The Phillies will likely have him compete for a bullpen job this spring, but Herndon will likely end up in Triple-A at the start of the season to get some additional work.
Herndon posted a 3.03 ERA with a 35:14 K:BB ratio in 65 innings for Double-A Arkansas, with 11 saves. His K:IP ratio was weak, but he posted a 2.25 GO:AO ratio. He could be a useful middle relief arm if he throws enough strikes in the majors with his sinker/slider combination.
