Ambriz accepted his assignment to Triple-A El Paso on Sunday, Chris Cotillo of MLB Daily Dish reports.

ANALYSIS
Ambriz decided to accept the assignment rather than go the route of free agency, though he probably wouldn't have been selected by another club. He's now off the 40-man roster and will be back with El Paso, where he posted a 1.62 ERA in 14 appearances earlier this season.

After being released by the Indians in June, Ambriz signed with the Astros and posted a 3.33 ERA and 18 strikeouts in 24.1 innings of relief at Triple-A. He's been very hittable in the upper minors, something that was not evident during his brief stint in the majors after a late-August callup. It is extremely encouraging, however, that Ambriz did not allow a single home run in his 19.1 innings at the major league level. He has battled his weight for years, and his conditioning will have to improve if he hopes to endure a 162-game season in Houston.

Ambriz is another promising right-hander in the Arizona system and while he was a 23-year-old at High-A Visalia, he pitched well enough to merit watching how he progresses against older competition at Double-A Mobile. His arsenal includes a low 90's fastball, splitter and an improving curveball, but his strikeout rate (133 in 150 IP) could tumble if he's unable to fully harness his breaking pitches. Given the organizational depth, Ambriz could factor into the long-term plans as a reliever if his pitches don't all hold up while he rises in the system.
