Closer Watch - A closer look at intriguing ninth-inning situations (also check out our Closer Grid)

Arizona - J.J. Putz (elbow) won’t be activated until next week at the earliest, so David Hernandez remains the closer for the D’Backs for the time being.

Chicago (NL) - After walking four batters and blowing a two-run lead Thursday night, Carlos Marmol struggled again Friday afternoon in a save situation. The Cubs still managed to pick up the win, but manager Mike Quade was forced to bring in Sean Marshall after Marmol allowed three more runners to reach base. Marmol remains the Cubs’ closer - he had given up just three earned runs in his last 18 appearances prior to Thursday’s - but Quade may be forced to go to Marshall a bit more often if Marmol is unable to harness his wildness.

New York (NL) - Without a clear-cut closer on the roster, recently recalled Ryota Igarashi (34:9 K:BB in 31 Triple-A innings) could factor into the ninth-inning mix at some point.

Recommended Pickup

Travis Snider, OF, TOR - After struggling through injuries in spring training and hitting just .184 through the season’s first month, Snider was sent to Triple-A Las Vegas in lst April to get healthy and find his swing. Snider found his stroke, hitting .333/.403/.488 in 49 games; and he appears to have brought his bat with him this time around, hitting .400 in eight games since being recalled. Though Snider has hit just four total home runs this season, he has doubled 32 times, including seven times since returning to the big club. Snider has also picked up 10 RBI in that span, and if some of those doubles happen to turn into homers, he could be a decent power source over the second half.

Other recent recommendations: Eric Thames, Bobby Parnell, Emilio Bonifacio, Mike Trout, Zach Cozart
