Closer Watch – A closer look at intriguing ninth-inning situations (also check out our Closer Grid)

Mets - Bobby Parnell notched the save against the Nationals on Sunday, less than 24 hours after blowing a ninth-run lead against the same team. The Mets appear committed to giving Parnell every opportunity down the stretch, and he is definitely the guy to own heading into 2012. Jason Isringhausen does not have a crucial ninth inning appearance since August 15.

Cubs - Sean Marshall picked up the save against the Pirates on Sunday, but he only earned the opportunity because Carlos Marmol threw a high number of pitches the previous night.

White Sox - Sergio Santos put two men on and allowed one to score in his one-third of an inning of work in Game 1 of Monday's doubleheader. This came just a few days after he allowed back-to-back home runs in a disappointing loss to the Tigers. He remains the White Sox's closer of the future, but that could change if the team keeps Chris Sale in the bullpen for 2012.

Recommended Pickup

Yonder Alonso, OF, CIN - Alonso has been in playing time purgatory since his late-July recall, but the Reds aren’t playing for much anymore, so he has started three of the team’s last four games in left field. He has hit .412/.459/.765 with three home runs in games in which he has started (albeit in a 34 at-bat sample size), but the playing time should continue to flow throughout September. He has also seen playing time at first and third, which could give him interesting eligibility in leagues with liberal policies.

Other recent recommendations: Jason Motte, Julio Teheran, Delmon Young, Nick Evans, Jesus Montero
