Closer Watch

Athletics – As the newly designated closer, Ryan Cook pitched a scoreless ninth in a tie game Thursday, then took home a win when Oakland rallied for three in the bottom of the inning. The walk rate remains problematic, but, well, the league is hitting .091 off him. Literally. That’ll help him hold off the competition.

Rockies – Rafael Betancourt had blown up in two of his last three outings, but on Thursday, he kept things uninteresting, striking out two in a scoreless ninth for his 11th save.

Recommended Pickup
John Mayberry, OF, PHI – Mayberry, a trendy sleeper pick in this year's drafts with much time in the outfield (and at first base) assured, slumped horribly early in the year and only now is coming out of it. He’s got an extra-base hit in five straight games and homered four times in his last seven outings, bumping his OPS up 100 points in the process. Summer is just ramping up and Citizens Bank Park is notorious for its long balls, making the widely available Mayberry a nice add for deeper formats. Ryan Howard is slowly getting healthy, but don’t worry about that affecting Mayberry, who will play if he continues to hit.

Other Recent Recommendations: Andrelton Simmons, Norichika Aoki, Anthony Rizzo, Alex Cobb, Trevor Plouffe
