Closer Watch

Diamondbacks - Heath Bell had to come in for the save for the three games prior to Friday afterstepping in as the closer while JJ Putz is out with injuries. That meant that when Arizona was up by one run entering the ninth Friday it would come down to David Hernandez. Hernandez looked unfazed in his first shot for a save in 2013, and only gave up one hit in the process. It would be assumed that Bell is going to be Arizona’s regular closer until Putz comes back, but Hernandez has shown more than capable of stepping in when needed.

Reds - Aroldis Chapman recorded his eighth save of the season Friday, but gave up a run in the process, but thankfully his team gave him a two run lead to work with entering the ninth. In Chapman’s 17 games played this year he has only given up a run three times, but it has now happened twice in his last three games. If a pattern develops then where Chapman is giving up runs on a more consistent basis then his job security may become in question, but that does seem doubtful as he has proven to be one of the most dominant closer in the bigs the past couple seasons.

Recommended Pickup

Scott Feldman, P, CHC - After losing his first three starts, Feldman has won has won his last three starts, making him one of the hottest starters in Major League Baseball. His best start was the second game of his current streak which was a complete game with 12 strikeouts May 1. Feldman came back in his next, and most recent, start on May 6 and pitched a scoreless seven innings against the Rangers, but had to be pulled in the eighth because of cramps. Feldman is expected to be fine, and if he pitches anything like he has as of late, he won’t be available on waivers in just about any format for long.
