Closer Watch

Baltimore Orioles – There have been some rumblings that the Orioles are looking for a new closer via trade before the deadline, but those rumors were squashed as the O’s intend to stick with Zach Britton who bounced back nicely from his July 18 implosion where he gave up a walk-off homer and three earned runs in the blown save against Oakland. Since then, Britton has had three saves in three appearances.

Chicago White Sox – The closer-by-committee situation just got uglier in Chicago with reliever Zach Putnam landing on the DL. This is a situation that you want to stay away from, but if you’re scrambling for saves then Jacob Petricka is the way I’d go.

Recommended Pickup

David Phelps, SP, NYY – The Yankees have been looking for some solid production out of their rotation and Phelps has been steering the ship in the right direction. His win-loss record (5-4) isn’t anything to get worked up over, but Phelps can certainly help your ratios (3.77 ERA and 1.34 WHIP) and strikeouts (86 K in 100.3 IP). I know, those ratio numbers don’t seem to excite me either after first looking at them, but if you keep in mind that Phelps has given up only two earned runs or less in his last five starts then there’s your value play. It may be the “what have you done for me lately” deal-io, but I’m okay with that. At this time of the season we need to really dig into the numbers. While it’s quite obvious, we all need contributing players and Phelps is doing just that.

Other Recent Recommendations : Odrisamer Despaigne, Brandon McCarthy, Danny Salazar, Chris Young (pitcher), Travis d’Arnaud
