Closer Watch

New York Yankees – I am by no means knocking closer David Robertson, as he’s done a fine job locking down games for the Yankees this season; however, you have to wonder what the Yankees plans will be with their dominant eighth-inning man, Dellin Betances, heading into the future. Some say he’s in the perfect role already, some say he’s the next Yankees’ closer, but it’s pretty evident that most agree Betances is as nasty as they come (5-0, 1.52 ERA, 0.75 WHIP and 114 K in 77 innings pitched). If for some reason Betances is floating around out there in a keeper set-up, he’s a legitimate grab regardless if he stays an eighth-inning guy or not. My most educated hunch has the Yanks sticking with things if they can bring Robertson back (free agent in 2015) without having to gut their pocketbook, but it’s highly possible they let Robertson (29-years old) go and ease Betances into the closer role in 2015. Either way, you want Betances in any keeper format.

Recommended Pickup

Drew Smyly, SP, TB – There may not be much time left to pick up Smyly in your league as his ownership percentage is jumping up like crazy in leagues. Smyly, who came over to Tampa Bay in the David Price deal, has been almost unhittable in his last four starts. During that stretch, Smyly has allowed a miniscule 11 hits in 30.2 innings pitched - quite impressive – while going 3-0 with 23 strikeouts. Plus, he’s only given up three earned runs in the process. Jump on Smyly if he’s still out there.

Other Recent Recommendations : Eric O’Flaherty, Jorge Soler, Jarred Cosart, Luke Gregerson and Oswaldo Arcia.
