FanDuel MLB: Tuesday Value Plays

FanDuel MLB: Tuesday Value Plays

This article is part of our FanDuel MLB series.

Pitcher

Matt Wisler, ATL vs. PHI ($6,000): Wisler collected 48 fantasy points in his most recent start, a one-hit effort over eight innings versus the Mets. He also tallied 38 fantasy points two starts prior versus the Dodgers, and draws a Philadelphia team that sports a .227 batting average and 25 team homers, both third-lowest in the majors. They've struggled against right-handed pitching to the tune of a .231 batting average, .285 wOBA, and 22 percent strikeout rate as well, and Wisler will face them in spacious Turner Field, where he owns a career 2.93 ERA over 58.1 innings.

Catcher

Stephen Vogt, OAK at BOS ($2,600): Vogt is always under consideration against right-handers, and his matchup against the vulnerable Sean O'Sullivan only cements his appeal. A recent slump has knocked Vogt's price down a few hundred dollars, but he's still the player that boasts a .327 wOBA and 31 career homers against righties. He'll have the added benefit of Fenway's short right field, and Vogt has notably pulled 41 percent of the pitches from right-handers that he's made contact on throughout his four-plus major league seasons. O'Sullivan surrendered a whopping .481 wOBA and 12 homers to lefty bats in 2015 over a 142-batter sample, and those hitters also posted a 46.1 percent pull rate and 41.7 percent hard contact rate on the pitches they connected with. Those gaudy numbers aren't much better career-wise, as he's yielded a .390 wOBA, 42.6 percent pull rate, and 34.3 percent hard contact rate to lefty bats over his six-plus major league seasons.

First Base

Justin Smoak, TOR at SFG ($2,700): The switch-hitting first baseman has a 43.9 fantasy point outing within his last 10 games, and also scored between 6.5 and 12.2 fantasy points in the last four games in which he's recorded an at-bat. He's decimating righties to the tune of a .449 wOBA, .182 ISO, 198 wRC+, and 48 percent hard contact rate over 59 plate appearances this season, and has blasted 71 of his 94 career homers against right-handed pitching. Matt Cain has been shown no mercy by either handedness of hitter over 31 innings this season, and has surrendered a .389 wOBA to left-handed hitters that rises to .405 when facing them at home. Make sure he's in the starting lineup, though, as with the DH unavailable, Edwin Encarnacion might pull duty at first base instead of Smoak.

Second Base

Brandon Phillips, CIN vs. PIT ($2,900): The versatile veteran is capable of contributing across the box score, and just recently posted a four-game streak scoring between 21.7 and 37.4 fantasy points. He enjoys facing Pirates starter Juan Nicasio as well, as he's managed a .455 average, double, triple and homer against him over 11 career at-bats. Phillips is having a strong season against both handedness of pitcher, and has a .359 wOBA, .238 ISO, and 39.1 percent hard contact rate against right-handers over 85 plate appearances. Nicasio has been effective against righty bats this season over a 71-batter sample, but has yielded a .328 wOBA to them over his five-plus major league seasons.

Third Base

Evan Longoria, TAM at SEA ($3,000): The veteran third baseman is always a threat to jack one out, as he did Monday night against the Mariners. He'll now see a matchup that's produced some long-ball success for him in the form of Wade Miley, whom he's touched up for two homers and three doubles over 19 career at-bats. Miley has pitched very well over his last two starts, but Longoria is sporting a .371 wOBA against southpaws this season that shoots up to .455 over the 12 at-bats he's had against them away from Tropicana Field. Meanwhile, Miley has yielded a .343 wOBA and four of his five homers to right-handed bats, along with a 34.6 percent hard contact rate.

Shortstop

Aledmys Diaz, STL at LAA ($3,200): The pricing algorithm appears to be busted on the talented rookie, as he continues to check in at bargain cost despite scoring between 12.2 and 24.9 fantasy points in four of his last six games. Diaz has a .425 wOBA, .222 ISO, 164 wRC+ and 45.8 percent hard contact rate against lefties in the 28 plate appearances he's recorded against them, and Hector Santiago, while a solid pitcher overall, has been trending downward over his last two starts. He's given up 16 hits, seven earned runs and five walks over his last 11 innings, along with a pair of homers. He's also surrendered a .320 wOBA and all six homers that he's yielded on the season to righty bats.

Outfield

Josh Reddick, OAK at BOS ($3,200): Reddick is our second left-handed value bat versus Sean O'Sullivan, whose career-long struggles against lefty hitters were covered in Stephen Vogt's entry. Reddick's bat has also been on fire, as he's scored between 15.4 and 18.7 fantasy points in his last five games. He's punished righties as usual this season, posting a .403 wOBA, .189 ISO, 169 wRC+ and 30.9 percent hard contact rate. He'll also face off against the team he spent his first three seasons with, and against which he's tallied a .308 average over 52 at-bats over the last three seasons.

Kole Calhoun, LAA vs. STL ($3,100): Cardinals starter Mike Leake's stint in St. Louis has gotten off to a forgettable start, and he's surrendered nine earned runs and four homers over his last 12 innings (over two starts) alone. Lefty bats have been responsible for four of the six homers he's yielded to date in 2016, and have also touched him up for a .339 wOBA and 39.6 percent hard contact rate. Calhoun owns a .324 wOBA against righties in 2016, along with a .335 wOBA and 41 homers against them over the course of his four-plus major league seasons. He's been swinging a hot bat also, scoring between 9.2 and 28.2 fantasy points in five of his last 10 games.

Brett Gardner, NYY vs. KAN ($3,200): Gardner's bat is starting to come alive, as he's tallied fantasy point totals of 12.7, 15.0, 18.7 and 18.7 in four of his last six games. He's sporting a .380 wOBA against righties overall, and that number climbs to .505 when facing them at Yankee Stadium. All four of his homers this season have been against righties and come at home, a major factor in his whopping .412 ISO against that handedness in his home park. His pull rate on pitches from righties is an elevated 51 percent, a notable advantage with the shorter porch in right field at home. Kris Medlen has surrendered a .343 wOBA in 52 plate appearances against lefty hitters this season, along with a substantial 38.9 percent pull rate.
