DraftKings MLB: Friday Picks

This article is part of our DraftKings MLB series.

PITCHER

Chris Sale, CWS vs. KC ($11,800): Sale's struggles over the last three starts have lowered his price slightly, but his full body of work suggests it'd be foolish to overlook him in this situation. Even in the midst of his worst three-game stretch of the season, he limited the Royals to just two runs while striking out seven in seven innings back on May 29, and his 9-2 record suggests the lefty is a heavy favorite to get back in the winner's circle in their rematch. Sale's career 10.12 K/9 suggests he's likely to rack up strikeouts at a high rate, while Kansas City's 27th-ranked offense makes the defending champs far from an intimidating matchup.

Jon Gray, COL vs. SD ($8,800): Gray has had the Padres' number in two meetings this season, allowing just 11 baserunners and four runs while striking out 23 in 13.0 innings. While his ERA at Coors Field is 2.25 runs higher than on the road, the 2013 third overall pick has had the benefit of facing the inept San Diego offense in two of his five appearances away from home. Considering he just struck out a career-high 12 in a win at Petco Park last time out, a change of venue is unlikely to alter things much just five days later. Take advantage of Gray's site-related discount against an offense that he loves to face.

CATCHER

Matt Wieters, BAL at TOR ($2,700): Wieters will be one of a few Orioles sluggers tasked with picking up the slack during Manny Machado's suspension, and he should be more than capable of doing so in baseball's fifth-most hitter-friendly park. His .351 wOBA against right-handed pitchers represents a significant upgrade over the his .252 mark from the other side, which plays into his favor with righty Marco Estrada pitching for Toronto.

FIRST BASE

David Ortiz, BOS at MIN ($5,500): Ortiz has more than earned his high salary this season with a league-leading .728 slugging percentage and 1.153 OPS. That elite production comes mostly as a result of his work against right-handed pitching, as the Red Sox first baseman has an otherworldly .484 wOBA against that side compared to a more human .405 mark against southpaws. Luckily for Ortiz, the Twins will be sending subpar righty Tyler Duffey to the mound coming off four consecutive outings with at least four earned runs allowed.

SECOND BASE

Chase Utley, LAD at SF ($3,100): Many will shy away from Utley with Johnny Cueto on the mound for the rival Giants, but the inexpensive veteran has proven capable of producing against the longtime Reds ace with a 10-for-26 lifetime mark, including seven hits in 16 at-bats since 2012. Utley's success shouldn't come as a total surprise considering he's still managing a .365 wOBA against right-handers this season despite his advanced age, and the second baseman's place at the top of the Dodgers' order suggests he should score some runs if he performs at his usual high rate against Cueto.

THIRD BASE

Martin Prado, MIA at ARI ($4,000): Prado has been rock-solid out of the No. 2 hole in the Marlins' lineup, posting a magnificent 1.75 BB/K along with a .380 wOBA against left-handed pitching this season. Meanwhile, Arizona starter Patrick Corbin is allowing a .352 wOBA to hitters from the right side, and he has walked eight batters in just 22.1 innings over his last four starts. Prado should find his way on base early and often in this favorable matchup, and the rest of the Marlins should have few problems driving him in considering Chase Field ranks as the fourth-best hitter's park in baseball with a 1.241 Park Factor.

SHORTSTOP

Francisco Lindor, CLE at LAA ($4,000): The switch-hitting Lindor has been particularly impressive from the right side, racking up a .375 wOBA versus a .334 mark batting left-handed. He'll be on his preferred side against Angels left-hander Hector Santiago, and Santiago's struggles against hitters from the right side (.352 wOBA against) suggests it won't be a quiet night for one of baseball's top all-around young players.

OUTFIELD

Nick Markakis, ATL vs. CHC ($3,100): Markakis' 25 RBI in 52 games against right-handers have been enough to consistently keep him in the heart of the Atlanta order, and he has a tremendous chance of adding to that total given his history against former Orioles teammate Jason Hammel. The veteran slugger is 9-for-19 with a 1.105 OPS against Hammel, and the right-hander's .343 wOBA allowed to southpaws despite a 7-1 record this season suggests that things are unlikely to be any different this time around.

Jackie Bradley Jr., BOS at MIN ($4,000): Teammate David Ortiz isn't the only Boston slugger who should benefit from facing Twins starter Tyler Duffey, as Bradley is also in position to make the struggling right-hander pay for his inability to retire left-handed bats. Duffey is allowing a .370 wOBA to left-handed hitters this season, while Bradley doesn't discriminate with a wOBA over .400 against both sides. Expect the Red Sox offense to have a field day in this one, with their left-handed bats leading the charge.

Austin Jackson, CWS vs. KC ($2,800): Despite batting right-handed himself, Jackson's .325 wOBA against right-handers compares very favorably to his .191 rate against lefties. He has been hot with 10 hits in five appearances prior to Wednesday's 0-for-5 showing, and he should be comfortable against a pitcher who has been equally effective against both sides in Ian Kennedy. With Kennedy winless in his last five starts and coming off a rough outing against the Indians, now is as good a time as any to fill out your lineup with a cheap bat near the top of the White Sox order.
