FanDuel MLB: Wednesday Value Plays

FanDuel MLB: Wednesday Value Plays

This article is part of our FanDuel MLB series.

Pitcher

Trevor Bauer, CLE vs. TB ($8,100): After being relegated to the bullpen to start the season, the former third overall pick from the 2011 draft has reestablished himself in the rotation. In the month of June, Bauer has a very solid xFIP of 3.72 to go with a 23.9 percent K-rate and, possibly most encouraging of all, a BB-rate of just 6.8 percent (his career mark is over 10 percent). This season against right handed pitching, the Rays also have a 25.2 percent K-rate and 92 wRC+.

Catcher

Victor Martinez, DET vs. SEA ($3,000): After a poor, injury-plagued season last year, the 37-year-old switch hitter has re-established himself as one of the best hitters in the league with a 140 wRC+. Martinez has just one season, 2014, where he had a better number and he finished second in the AL MVP voting that year. Hisashi Iwakuma is having the worst season of his career with a 4.40 xFIP and a 1.39 HR/9 behind an increased fly ball rate.

First Base

Hanley Ramirez, BOS vs. CHW ($3,000): Despite what's overall been a mediocre season at the plate, Ramirez has been spectacular against left-handed pitching with a .411 wOBA and 158 wRC+. Jose Quintana has been very good this year, but every home run He's allowed has been against a righty with his xFIP sitting at a respectable but hittable 3.95.

Second Base

Jonathan Schoop, BAL vs. SD ($3,400): Opposing the Orioles is the struggling Erik Johnson, who's allowed a .526 wOBA and 6.47 xFIP to right-handed bats on the season. Schoop has gotten better as the season has gotten longer. The second baseman has a .391 wOBA and 146 wRC+ in June and with Manny Machado serving a suspension, the second baseman gets a slightly more favorable spot in the batting order.

Third Base

Todd Frazier, CHW at BOS ($3,200): Despite an inhumanly low BABIP of .182 and BA of .200, Frazier has managed a positive 102 wRC+ due to his 20 home runs on the season. There is a correlation between his drop in hard hit percentage and increase in soft hit percentage and the lowered BABIP, but with a career number of .278 it's only a matter of time for the number to normalize at least into the mid .200s. Last season, Frazier had a BABIP of .271 and a .346 ISO against left-handed pitchers. Opposing southpaw Eduardo Rodriguez has allowed a .419 wOBA, 6.41 xFIP and incredible 3.12 HR/9 against righties this season.

Shortstop

Tim Anderson, CHW vs. DET ($2,500): His salary has risen slightly above the minimum, but Anderson is maintaining his hold on the leadoff spot and with an above average wRC+ you shouldn't begrudge the additional couple hundred dollars. On a further analytical point, the rookie is validating some of the concerns many had about him when he was called up and he has yet to draw a walk while striking out at a rate of 28.6 percent. He also has a home run and a stolen base in the last five days, however.

Outfield

Nomar Mazara, TEX vs. CIN ($2,900): Mazara holds a .366 wOBA and 125 wRC+ against righties this season, while Dan Straily has allowed a 5.65 xFIP against left-handed bats.

Robbie Grossman, MIN vs. PHI ($3,000): Grossman had seen ineffective call-ups to the majors in each of the three years prior to this one, but after being acquired by the Twins he's suddenly exploded onto the scene. Grossman has a .446 wOBA and 186 wRC+ against left-handed pitching while Phillies southpaw Adam Morgan has a 4.62 xFIP and 6.49 ERA.

Travis Jankowski, SDP at BAL ($2,000): Jankowski isn't an elite hitter, but he's leading off and the lefty has a solid enough .325 wOBA against right-handed pitching this season with six stolen bases in just 55 plate appearances. You're not looking for elite numbers here, but he has a positive matchup at the minimum price against Ubaldo Jimenez's 7.34 ERA on the season.
