FanDuel MLB: Monday Value Plays

This article is part of our FanDuel MLB series.

PITCHER

Jimmy Nelson, MIL at SD ($7,200): There's not a ton to like with Nelson, as his 3.42 ERA seems a little lucky considering he has a 1.40 WHIP and 6.77 K/9 ratio. However, this pick is all about the matchup, as he gets to pitch in Petco Park against a Padres team that is one of the worst against right-handed pitching and just traded arguably their best hitter in Matt Kemp. Their .290 wOBA against righties is the worst mark in the league and their 24.8 percent strikeout rate is the second-worst. Nelson has also pitched better of late, posting a 2.41 ERA over his last six starts.

CATCHER

Mike Zunino, SEA vs. BOS ($2,300): Zunino has a .970 OPS (including three home runs) in 29 plate appearances since joining the Mariners. He'll get the favorable righty vs. lefty split against Eduardo Rodriguez, who has a 6.51 ERA while allowing a .391 wOBA to right-handed batters this season. Zunino had 17 home runs in the minors before being called up, and using a mini-stack of Mariners (Nelson Cruz, Franklin Gutierrez) along with Zunino isn't a bad idea.

FIRST BASE

Hanley Ramirez, BOS at SEA ($3,200): While this isn't a very cheap price for Ramirez, there are 10 other first basemen who are more expensive. Ramirez has a .428 wOBA against left-handed pitching this season and now faces James Paxton, who has a 4.82 ERA at home but has a healthy strikeout rate at 21.3 percent. Still, this is a nice price to get Ramirez given his success against lefties, and he should be under-owned in GPPs with teammate David Ortiz or other first basemen likely having higher ownership levels.

SECOND BASE

Logan Forsythe, TB vs. KC ($3,600): This isn't exactly a cheap price for Forsythe, and opposing starter Danny Duffy has been outstanding this season. that being said, Forsythe has made himself pretty matchup-proof when facing left-handed pitching, sporting a .390 wOBA against southpaws this season. He should be in the leadoff spot and will have fellow lefty-killers Evan Longoria (.360 wOBA) and Steve Pearce (.502 wOBA) hitting behind him. The matchup against Duffy will make Forsythe a good contrarian play for GPPs.

THIRD BASE

Wilmer Flores, NYM vs. NYY ($3,200): The Subway series gets underway tonight at Citi Field and Flores should be hitting cleanup when he faces off against CC Sabathia, who appears to be wearing down, posting a 6.27 ERA over his last six starts. Flores has a .433 wOBA against lefties this season fueled by six home runs in only 71 plate appearances.

SHORTSTOP

Javier Baez, CHC vs. MIA ($3,200): Baez posted an .866 OPS in July after reaching .898 the month before. He has a ridiculous .539 wOBA at home against left-handed pitching and was used the other day in the cleanup spot when the Cubs faced lefty Wade Miley. Monday's pitching opponent, Adam Conley, has struggled the most on the road this season against lefties, surrendering a .367 wOBA to them. Don't forget about that Kris Bryant fellow (.427 wOBA against lefties) either tonight.

OUTFIELD

David Peralta, ARI vs. WAS ($2,200): The matchup against Stephen Strasburg is less than ideal but there are a few factors working in Peralta's favor: he has a career .376 wOBA against right-handed pitching and Chase Field is easily one of the top-five hitters' parks. Meanwhile, Strasburg has struggled more on the road and against left-handed hitters during his career. This is a risky pick but it could pay off in a big way considering the price and the low-ownership Peralta will likely have.

Keon Broxton, MIL at SD ($2,600): Broxton comes in with two doubles, a triple and a home run over his last four games. He is a speedster who stole 40 bases last season across three levels, and has 26 between Triple-A and the majors this year. He's also flashed a little power with 10 home runs this season between those two levels, and Petco Park has played as more of a hitters' park this season. Jarred Cosart (5.95 ERA) has struggled in the big leagues this season and his inability to produce a high strikeout rate will let Broxton put the ball in play and use his speed to get on base.

Lonnie Chisenhall, CLE vs. MIN ($2,700): It was disappointing to see the Indians put up a big number Sunday and check the box score to see all Chisenhall did was hit two singles without a run or RBI. That being said, Monday is primed for a breakout, as he has a .351 wOBA against right-handed pitching, and while opposing starter Jose Barrios is a good prospect, he has struggled in limited time with the Twins and a road start against a hot-hitting team isn't an ideal situation. A Cleveland stack could be in play as they average scoring 5.7 runs per game at home this season.
