Yahoo DFS Baseball: Thursday Picks

PITCHER

Chris Tillman, BAL at OAK ($41): Stacking Orioles' hitters against A's spot starter Andrew Triggs makes sense, and we'll get to that later. But with Triggs on the hill, the O's win percentage increases, giving Tillman nice appeal as the day's sixth-highest priced starter. Tillman has allowed 15 runs over his last seven starts, spanning 44.2 innings, with six of those runs coming in one outing. Oakland has a .149 ISO against right handers, and Tillman struck out seven in 6.1 innings in a May 8 start against the A's.

Jameson Taillon, PIT vs. SD ($36):
Taillon has gone six innings in five consecutive starts and in seven of his first nine career appearances. He's struck out six or more in three straight and has allowed eight earned runs over his last 30 innings. Facing a Padres lineup that sports a .233 batting average, .294 wOBP and .155 ISO against righties, Taillon has high upside with a high floor, making him an ideal target in all formats.

CATCHER

Matt Wieters, BAL at OAK ($7): Baltimore has plenty of high-upside bats, most of whom are slumping. Wieters falls into the latter category, but not likely the former, as he's had only one double-digit point outing since June 28. But A's starter Andrew Triggs is unlikely to last more than three innings, having topped that only once in 19 appearances, and he's allowing a .349 wOBP to lefties. Wieters sat Wednesday, so he seems safe to pencil in for the daytime start, and could see some residual effects from an offensive explosion from his mates.

FIRST BASE

Mike Napoli, CLE vs. LAA ($24): There is little value in the top-priced player at his position, but Napoli's name and age may have him passed over enough to present a bargain. He's hit safely in 10 straight contests, owning 13 hits in that span, eight of which have gone for extra bases. Napoli has a solid .353 wOBP against righties, while also offering a .265 ISO, and has earned double-digit fantasy points in all but two games since June 30.

SECOND BASE

Jurickson Profar, TEX vs. COL ($8): If you take every other play in this column, you can purchase top-priced second baseman Jose Altuve ($23) and still have $8 to spare, which allows for upgrades across the board. But the traditional thinking is to save at the middle infield slots, which leaves Profar almost by default. So long as he's in the lineup, Profar brings a .355 wOBp against righties (compared to .252 against lefties) into a contest with Chad Bettis' 5.13 ERA.

THIRD BASE

Alex Bregman, HOU at MIN ($7): Entering Wednesday, Bregman had earned 30 fantasy points over his last four games. He's moved into the second slot in the lineup, giving him more pitches to hit and has responded admirably. He's facing a pitcher in Jose Berrios who is allowing a .489 wOBP and a 1.200 OPS to right-handers over 11.2 innings, and when paired with the bottom tier price, Bregman comes with limited risk.

SHORTSTOP

Xander Bogaerts, BOS vs. NYY ($15): It's a coin flip as to the better value among Red Sox bats between Bogaerts and outfielder Jackie Bradley ($14) against Michael Pineda, who has struggled all season. Pineda has allowed twice as many long balls (14:7) to righties in just 20 less innings (72.2:52.2), and has a 3 percent lower strikeout rate, giving Bogaerts a seemingly safe floor.

OUTFIELD

Miguel Sano, MIN vs. HOU ($19): Since being threatened with a demotion, Sano has hit safely in six straight prior to Wednesday, going 9-for-23 with four home runs and two doubles. He carries a .409 wOBP against lefties into a matchup with Astros' starter Dallas Keuchel, a pitcher who has surrendered 15 of his 17 homers to right-handed bats.

Ian Desmond, TEX vs. COL ($11):
Desmond has labored lately, going just 5-for-36 in August, which explains his exploitable price. Desmond has a .375 wOBP at home against right-handers entering a matchup with Chad Bettis, who has allowed a .353 wOBP on the road to righties. He's also seen a dip in strikeouts away from home, fanning 5.85 righties per nine compared to 8.42, seemingly keeping Desmond's risk low.

Michael Conforto, NYM vs. ARI ($9):
Conforto's splits remain skewed by his early season success, and there isn't any getting around that he's 5-for-22 in August. But four of those hits have gone for extra bases, and he'll face rightie Braden Shipley, who is allowing a .420 wOBP and 1.001 OPS to lefties, giving Conforto some upside as a third outfielder in tournament formats.
