Yahoo DFS Baseball: Sunday Picks

PITCHER

Gio Gonzalez, WAS vs. PHI ($34): The Phillies have been one of the most inept offenses in the league all season, and they have a majors-worst .280 wOBA and .109 ISO against southpaws. Gonzalez has over 20 fantasy points against the Phillies in two of his three starts against them this season, with the most recent a 25-fantasy point effort an Aug. 31. Although he struggled against an improved Braves squad in his last start, Gonzalez has shown he knows his way around a Philadelphia lineup that doesn't strike fear into anyone.

James Paxton, SEA at OAK ($32): Paxton has been up-and-down but faces an A's offense that's generated a paltry .297 wOBA against southpaws that ranks as the lowest in the American League. They also have the dubious distinction of the AL's worst home wOBA (.287), a figure that also ranks the second-lowest in the majors. The lefty has also flashed a ceiling north of 30 fantasy points in three starts this season, making him a cost-effective tournament play.

CATCHER

Gary Sanchez, TB at NYY ($23) : The dynamic rookie has decimated right-handed pitching to the tune of .516 wOBA, .398 ISO and 42.3 percent hard contact rate. He's been even deadlier against that handedness at Yankee Stadium, where the wOBA rises to .521. Rays starter Matt Andriese has been fairly steady throughout the season but has given up a .329 wOBA, 17.6 percent HR/FB and 36.6 percent hard contact rate to right-handed hitters away from Tropicana Field.

FIRST BASE

Carlos Santana, CLE at MIN ($20): The switch-hitting Santana is one of several Indians bats to like against Twins starter Jose Berrios, who's surrendered a .429 batting average and .466 wOBA to left-handed hitters at Target Field, along with a bloated 5.80 xFIP and 40 percent hard contact rate. Santana has been much stronger when hitting from the left side, tallying a .368 wOBA, .270 ISO, 26 homers and a 38.7 percent hard contact rate against right-handed pitching, along with a .403 wOBA and .280 ISO over his last eight games.

SECOND BASE

Jason Kipnis, CLE at MIN ($18) : Kipnis provides another appealing option against Berrios, given his .356 wOBA and .205 ISO against righties, against which he's also posted 16 of his 22 homers on the season. He's also posted a solid 38.7 percent hard contact rate against that handedness, while Berrios given up 11 runs (10 earned) and generated a 9.00 ERA over the 10 innings covering his last two starts.

THIRD BASE

Adrian Beltre, TEX at LAA ($24): Jered Weaver and his mid-80s fastball shape up as a tantalizing target for Beltre's smoking-hot bat. The veteran slugger has a .344 wOBA and 18 homers against righties, along with a 34.1 percent hard contact rate against them away from Globe Life Park. He's also hit safely in six of his last seven games and sports a .355 batting average, .430 wOBA and a pair of homers over that span. Meanwhile, Weaver has allowed a .374 wOBA, 19 homers and a 5.70 xFIP to righty bats, along with a 40.6 percent hard contact rate, this season.

SHORTSTOP

Corey Seager, LAD at MIA ($21): Seager gets to take a crack at Marlins starter Jose Urena, who's given up a .366 wOBA to left-handed hitters that rises to .395 when facing them at Marlins Park. Five of the seven homers he's given up on the season have also come off lefty bats, which have managed hard contact against him at a 38.2 percent rate at home. Those numbers could spell disaster against Seager, who has a .340 batting average, 19 homers, .406 wOBA and .228 ISO against righties, along with a 21.1 percent HR/FB rate and 39.8 percent hard contact rate. He's been wielding a hot bat as well, with four multi-hit outings in the five games.

OUTFIELD

Ian Desmond, TEX at LAA ($15): Desmond shapes up as an excellent value play against Weaver, whose vulnerability to right-handed hitters were earlier. Desmond has tagged righties for 16 of his 22 homers and a .340 wOBA, while also posting a 23.8 percent HR/FB rate and 33.6 percent hard contact rate against that handedness on the road.

Joc Pederson, LAD at MIA ($16): Marlins starter Jose Urena's problems against left-handed hitters were detailed earlier in Seager's entry, making Pederson another high-upside tournament play. The slugging outfielder has smacked 19 of his 20 homers on the season against righty arms, and he has a .375 wOBA, .260 ISO and 40.6 percent hard contact rate against that handedness overall. Urena also notably gives up a much higher fly ball rate to lefty bats, while Pederson puts the ball in the air 41.3 percent of the time against righties, while also posting a 21.1 percent HR/FB rate against that handedness.

Jayson Werth, WAS vs. PHI ($19): Phillies starter Adam Morgan turned in a surprisingly solid start against the Marlins his last time out, but he has still surrendered a .439 wOBA, 10 homers, a 2.73 HR/9 and a 39.5 percent hard contact rate to right-handed hitters on the road. Werth has been lethal against lefties all season, tallying a massive .451 wOBA, .300 ISO and a 46.5 percent hard contact rate against southpaws, along with 12 homers. Morgan also notably gives up a 23.3 percent HR/FB rate to right-handed hitters away from Citizens Bank Park, while Werth has a robust 48.6 percent fly ball rate against left-handed pitching at Nationals Park.
