Yahoo DFS Baseball: Thursday Picks

This article is part of our Yahoo DFS Baseball series.

PITCHER

J.A. Happ, TOR at LAA ($40): Happ appeared to right the ship in his last start, allowing two runs while striking out five over six innings. Despite winning just once in his last four starts, Happ has 18 victories on the year, and it's a game the Jays need to maintain their wild-card position. The Angels have struggled against lefties to the tune of a .148 ISO and 29.7 percent hard hit ball rate, and entered Wednesday having scored just four runs in their last three games. Additionally, the Angels will start Daniel Wright and his 7.50 ERA over 18.0 innings, giving Happ a great shot at his 19th win.

Adam Wainwright, STL at SF ($32): Wainwright's peripheral stats aren't going to inspire much confidence (.364 wOBP on the road, 14 of his 16 home runs allowed away from home), but the play is against the Giants' bats. San Francisco scored five runs while being swept at San Diego in their last series. As a squad, they've posted only a .282 wOBP, .131 ISO and 73 wRC+. For his part, Wainwright has gone at least seven innings while allowing one run and striking out seven in two of his last three starts.

CATCHER

Alex Avila, CLE at CWS ($14): Avila has just two hits in his last 20 at-bats, but they both managed to clear the fence. Avila has a bottom-tier floor at a substantial price, which could lead to very low ownership. He has a somewhat eye-opening .408 wOBP against southpaws heading in to a contest against Mike Clevinger, who has not made it out of the sixth inning since the All-Star break while posting a 5.01 ERA over 41.1 innings.

FIRST BASE

Carlos Santana, CLE at CWS ($21): Santana has a .403 wOBP this month, having homered three times in 12 games. He also has a 38.2 percent hard-hit rate against righties heading into a matchup with the combustible James Shields, who has allowed 14 homers to lefties over 74 innings, 11 of which have come at home. He's also allowed at least five runs in five of his last eight starts.

The Twins Kenny Vargas ($12) also makes for a solid tournament gamble.

SECOND BASE

Devon Travis, TOR at LAA ($13): Travis represents a cheap option to get in on Angels starter Daniel Wright, and one with a safe floor among the rest of the Jays' feast-or-famine bats. Travis has a 12-game hitting streak, collecting 20 hits over that span, and he boasts a .404 wOBP against righties on the road.

THIRD BASE

Manny Machado, BAL vs, TB ($21): The price shouldn't be overly prohibitive with a lack of top-tier pitching, and Machado couldn't offer a much higher floor, as he has gone hitless just six times since Aug. 1. That he has .396 wOBP and 37.1 percent hard hit rate against righties should only add to his upside.

SHORTSTOP

Xander Bogaerts, BOS vs NYY ($14): Bogaerts has a tough matchup with Masahiro Tanaka, who has allowed two or fewer runs in five straight starts, but Bogaerts brings a hot stick into Thursday. He has seven hits, including two home runs, five runs scored and six RBI in his last six games, scoring double-digit fantasy points four times.

OUTFIELD

Kevin Kiermaier, TB at BAL ($19): Though he's cooled off of late, having gone 3-for-15 in his last four games, Kermaier has gone deep four times in 44 at-bats while posting a 1.122 OPS this month. That figures to play well against Yovani Gallardo and his .360 wOBP allowed to lefties.

Joc Pederson, LAD at ARI ($15): All Dodgers bats should be in play against Archie Bradley, who has allowed seven runs over his last nine innings after giving up 23 runs over 29 innings last month. Bradley's also surrendered a .398 wOBP to lefties at home. Pederson has hit nine of his 21 home runs on the road against right handers while posting a hard-hit rate of 40.6 percent.

Tyler Naquin, CLE at CWS ($11): Naquin appears to have hit a rookie wall and is no sure bet to be in the lineup. But he merits a look if given the starting opportunity despite his recent struggles thanks to a matchup with the aforementioned Shields, who has allowed five home runs in 8.1 innings this month. Naquin leads the team against righties with a .385 wOBP, 142 wRC+ and 41.5 percent hard-hit ball percentage.
