Yahoo DFS Baseball: Saturday Picks

This article is part of our Yahoo DFS Baseball series.

Pitcher

Jon Lester CHC vs. LAD ($55): It will be difficult to fade Lester in a two-pitcher format, as the Dodgers finished the regular season with the worst wOBA in the league against left-handed pitching. It is also worth noting that the Dodgers were a bottom five team when it came to flyball rate, while Lester kept the ball on the ground 47 percent of the time.

J.A. Happ, TOR at CLE ($41): Two-game slates sometimes force us to make selections based on a process of elimination. While I am not necessarily thrilled to take Happ against a capable Cleveland lineup, I can't see selecting Josh Tomlin and his massive home run rates (more on that later). Happ kept a wOBA under .300 against both sides of the platoon in 2016, while notching a HR/9 rate of 1.00.

Catcher

Yan Gomes / Roberto Perez, CLE vs. TOR ($7): There is no powerhouse option behind the plate, so it makes some sense to roster a low-cost bat with a platoon advantage to save up for the heavy artillery. Gomes played just 74 games this season due to injuries, but did tally a .171 ISO against left-handers. Perez ended the season sporting a .160 ISO against southpaws.

First Base

Anthony Rizzo, CHC vs. LAD ($17): Rizzo should probably be on the list of guys who need to be strongly considered for DFS lineups, as he finished the 2016 season with a Runs Above Average score of nearly 15.00 against the slider, a pitcher Kenta Maeda threw 29 percent of the time. Maeda's strikeout and walk rates went from fantastic to mediocre when he faced lefty hitting, which contributed to a 4.74 xFIP against his opposite hand.

Second Base

Ben Zobrist, CHC vs. LAD ($15): Zobrist showed a decent amount of power against righties this season, tallying a .182 ISO over 380 at-bats. The Zorilla should be a particularly tough out against Maeda, having walked more times then he struck out in 2016.

Third Base

Josh Donaldson, TOR at CLE ($20): Tomlin had serious issues keeping the ball in the park against righties during the regular season, which resulted in a 2.00 HR/9 rate over 97.1 innings. Donaldson produced a .272 ISO against same-handed pitchers in 448 at-bats this year.

Shortstop

Troy Tulowitzki, TOR at CLE ($14): Tulo's numbers have looked less impressive since leaving Coors Field, but he showed good peripherals against righties this season, tallying a .196 ISO and a 35 percent hard contact rate. The Blue Jays are a predominately right-handed offense, which should allow them to put some runs on the board against Tomlin.

Outfield

Yasiel Puig, LAD at CHC ($8): Puig's 2016 season was a long and strange journey, but let's not forget that it ended with him tallying a .210 ISO against lefty pitching. Lester doesn't give up many dingers, but this price can help you assemble a Blue Jays stack while providing the potential to rack up points.

Rajai Davis, CLE vs. TOR ($11): Traditionally Davis has handled left-handed pitching, but that didn't hold true in 2016, as he registered just a .670 OPS against southpaws. The reason he appears here is because of his penchant for stealing bases (he stole 43 this season). On a slate where there is bound to be a significant amount of overlap, it may come in handy to have a lesser-targeted asset who is a threat to get you four points whenever he reaches first.

Brandon Guyer, CLE vs. TOR ($9): Guyer offers us another cheap platoon matchup, as he hit .333/.461/.553 with a .220 ISO against lefties this year. Guyer went 3-for-4 with an RBI in his lone postseason contest against David Price and the Red Sox.
