The Man Advantage: Producing on the Power Play

As the calendar turns to December, we're starting to get some solid information about who's producing on the power play. There are several Flyers and Blue Jackets who are really racking up the points while up a man, including Claude Giroux, who has 12. Here are some power-play producers that might be available in your league…

Mike Fisher, C, NAS – Fisher already has eight points with the extra man despite missing time earlier in the season with an injury. The veteran hasn't had more than 14 power-play points in any of the last last five seasons — and he only had five last year — but he's averaging 2:55 per game on the power play which is the most since he arrived in the Music City in 2010-11. That said, maybe his increased role means there is some legitimacy to this uptick in points.

Ryan O'Reilly, C, BUF - O'Reilly, like Fisher, missed time with an injury, which may be why he's available in a decent number of leagues. Despite only playing in 16 games, he's got seven power-play points. In two of his last three seasons, he had 22 points with the extra man, and in between he had 12, so he's definitely worth looking at if he's hanging around on your waiver wire.

Leon Draisaitl, C, EDM – Would you believe that Draisaitl and Connor McDavid have the same number of power-play points? It's true. They both both have seven points, with four of Draisaitl's coming in his last five games. Draisaitl only had nine all of last season, but this is only his third campaign in the NHL and he's still young. The Oilers are getting better around him, and because of that he'll assuredly set a new career high in power-play points.

Henrik Sedin, C, VAN – Sedin, like basically every Canuck, started the season slowly, and it looked like perhaps the 36-year-old Swede had lost a step or two. He has lost a little something, but perhaps there's still some life left in him. Sedin has six power-play points, including four in his last eight outings. He's still playing more than three minutes per game with the extra man, and he's had at least 20 power-play points in his last two seasons.

Ryan Sproul, D, DET – There aren't a lot of defensemen readily available that can help pad your power-play stats, as most of those guys are already snatched up — like Zack Werenski and Mark Streit. Sproul was up earlier this season before being sent back down, but seems like he might be up with Detroit for good. He's got three power-play points in 12 games, and is averaging 2:40 with the man advantage. The 23-year-old has also taken 24 shots on goal, which is a nice pace for a young defenseman getting acclimated to life in the NHL.

Ben Hutton, D, VAN – Two Canucks in one article — has the world gone mad? Hutton has four power-play points, three of which have come in his last five games. There is a hitch, though. He's only averaging 1:55 per game on the power play, and his usage with the man advantage seems to be all over the place from game to game. Hutton also had seven power-play points last year as a 22-year-old rookie, so perhaps there's more than meets the eye when it comes to the young blueliner.
