The Z Files: Fantasy Impact of the WBC

Todd Zola

Todd has been writing about fantasy baseball since 1997. He's the defending champion in NL Tout Wars and Mixed LABR as well as a multi-time league winner in the National Fantasy Baseball Championship. Todd is now setting his sights even higher: The Rotowire Staff League. Lord Zola, as he's known in the industry, won the 2013 FSWA Fantasy Baseball Article of the Year award and was nominated for the 2015 Fantasy Baseball Writer of the Year.

Every few years, the fantasy baseball enthusiast is faced with a dilemma: namely, what to do with participants in the World Baseball Classic (WBC)? Do they perform better or worse during the upcoming season? Do they start slow then heat up, or vice versa? Are they more of a threat to incur an injury?

Something Ive learned over the years is in order to dole out the best analysis for fantasy purposes, its imperative to think like a fantasy owner. In fact, the best advice I received upon becoming a fantasy writer was figure out what youd want to see as a reader and write that. There have been some in-depth studies looking at the impact of the WBC. What I care about is how it affects fantasy-relevant players.
