FanDuel MLB: Wednesday Value Plays

FanDuel MLB: Wednesday Value Plays

This article is part of our FanDuel MLB series.

Pitcher

Jason Vargas, KAN vs. SFG ($8,200): Vargas has allowed one run in 13.2 innings to open the season, striking out 14 while allowing 10 base hits. He'll need to be similarly impressive in his third outing if he hopes to match Giants starter Madison Bumgarner, and that hope makes him a nice bargain in a slate with plenty of top-name options. San Francisco is a mid-tier offense against lefties, ranking 15th with a wOBA of .307 in 183 plate appearances while striking out 20.8 percent of the time.

Catcher

Yasmani Grandal, LAD vs. COL (2,900): Grandal has caught all three of Kershaw's starts thus far and didn't play Tuesday, making him a safe pick Wednesday. He was better against righties than lefties last year, but still managed a .347 wOBA and .171 ISO against southpaws in 2016, giving him a fighting chance at some bigger production against Rockies starter Tyler Anderson, who has allowed 14 runs in 14.2 innings.

First Base

Joey Votto, CIN vs. BAL ($3,800): Votto's slow start should have him overlooked among the big bats at first base. But he homered Tuesday, his second in four games, and he's now hit safely in four straight and in five of his last six. He owns a .406 wOBA against righties since last year and enters a matchup with Ubaldo Jimenez, who has allowed five runs in each of his first two starts, both of which ended in 4.1 innings.

Second Base

Brandon Drury, ARI at SD (2,800): There's not huge upside in Drury, but he has a .341 wOBA against lefties since last April, the third-highest rate among D-Backs regulars. The price here is great at a non-premium position, and the stats suggest Drury won't hurt you at all.

Third Base

Kris Bryant, CHC vs. MIL ($3,900): At anything under $4,000, Bryant immediately looks like a bargain. And facing Wednesday starter Tommy Milone and his 7.36 ERA should afford Bryant plenty of run-producing chances. Bryant has a ridiculous .449 wOBA against lefties over the last year, going deep 14 times in 156 at-bats.

Shortstop

Adam Frazier, PIT vs. STL ($2,500): Frazier was thrust into the leadoff spot Tuesday due to Starling Marte's 80-game suspension, and while playing outfield, he's set a bargain basement price at a second-tier position. He has a .340 wOBA against righties across 152 career plate appearances, and would only need to reach base on his own once to perform up to his price.

Outfield

Mookie Betts, BOS vs. TOR ($4,200): Betts has ripped off eight hits in his last 13 at-bats, and 12 in his last 22 — four of which have gone for extra bases. He had a .341 wOBA and .248 ISO against lefties last year heading towards a collision with Jays starter Francisco Liriano, who has allowed seven runs in as many innings.

Melky Cabrera, CWS at NYY ($3,100): There may not be a less sexy option than Cabrera given his lack of upside, but he's hitting in the heart of the order against a pitcher that has allowed 13 runs in his first 14 innings this year. Cabrera had a .338 wOBA last year against righties while fanning just 9.8 percent of the time, further illustrating his low ceiling, but stable floor.

Josh Reddick, HOU vs. LAA ($2,800): Reddick is essentially a platoon option, but his left-handed bat should play well Wednesday against Angels starter J.C. Ramirez and his 7.20 ERA. Reddick hasn't gone deep yet this year, but has a .372 wOBA against righties on the heels of last year's .371 tally, making him a cheap option in an offense that should fair well.
