FanDuel MLB: Sunday Value Plays

This article is part of our FanDuel MLB series.

PITCHER

Kevin Gausman, BAL at KAN ($6,500): It's becoming a bit too easy to simply pick the starting pitcher against a bad Royals offense, but Gausman offers a rare opportunity for big upside at a very minimal price thanks to his early season struggles. The Royals continue to rank last in runs scored, with 14 fewer tallies than the second-lowest total, and they strike out at a 21.5 percent rate against righties. They also have only a .283 wOBA, .138 ISO and a woeful 7.2 percent walk rate. All those numbers play towards Gausman's favor, and he's coming off his best outing of the year, striking out eight Nationals over seven innings. The only caveat with Gausman, other than his 6.63 ERA, is he seems too obvious of a choice, and as such, will likely be heavily owned.

CATCHER

Miguel Montero, CHC at STL ($2,700): Montero hasn't started since May 10, but given the quick turnaround Sunday afternoon, he seems likely to draw the start. He's enjoying quite a resurgence after last year's woeful offensive performance, and has a .375 wOBA and .233 ISO against righties. That gives him a bit of upside against Adam Wainwright and his 6.37 ERA.

FIRST BASE

Trey Mancini, BAL at KAN ($3,300): Royals starter Chris Young will make his second straight spot start in place of the injured Ian Kennedy, and he makes for a great pitcher to pick against, as he's allowing a .377 wOBA to righties this year. Meanwhile, Mancini has straight raked against right handers to the tune of a .543 wOBA and .607 ISO. So long as he's confirmed as the starter at designated hitter, Mancini has a plus matchup at a premium position while coming at a discount.

SECOND BASE

Brad Miller, TAM at BOS ($3,000): Miller didn't start Saturday's matchup with lefty Chris Sale, so it's tough to fully trust him in a matchup with southpaw Drew Pomeranz on Sunday. However, he ranks third on the team among those with regular appearances with a .336 wOBA against lefties and had hit safely in four straight prior to Saturday's pinch hit appearance. Pomeranz has been incredibly vulnerable to left-handed bats, surrendering a .486 wOBA and allowing 13 base runners to 29 batters faced.

THIRD BASE

Anthony Rendon, WAS at BAL ($3,500): Rendon is looking like an everyday value play given the strength of the top-tier options at the hot corner. He had hit in seven straight entering Saturday, driving in six runs, walking five times and scoring five times. He's been better against lefties, but still sports a stable .322 wOBA against righties entering a matchup with Jeremy Hellickson, who is surrendering a .357 wOBA to righties and has allowed nine runs in his last 8.2 innings.

SHORTSTOP

Dansby Swanson, ATL at MIA ($2,500): You won't find many cheaper starters than the struggling Swanson, who is showing signs of breaking out of his funk. He's hit safely in five straight starts and has been the victim of some bad luck, owning just a .210 BABIP despite 86.7 percent of his balls being hit at at least a medium rate. The Marlins are bumping Dan Straily's start to Monday, and it seems likely that Justin Nicolino will be recalled to start the contest. Nicolino owned a 4.46 ERA and just a 14.4 percent whiff rate in 36.1 innings at Triple-A.

OUTFIELD

Aaron Judge, NYY vs. HOU ($4,300): Judge is pricing himself out of being an option, but his power potential continues to be undeniable. He sports a whopping .585 wOBA and .587 ISO at home against righties, with 10 of his 13 long balls coming against that hand. You're betting on clearing the fences here, but that seems like a worthwhile gamble against Astros' starter Mike Fiers, who's allowed an eye-opening 14 home runs over 30.1 innings, including nine to right handed hitters in 60 plate appearances.

Kevin Pillar, TOR vs. SEA ($3,400): Pillar has been somewhat surprisingly effective to open the year, boasting a .425 wOBA against lefties. The Blue Jays' offense hasn't been as expected, but trusting Pillar against a struggling Ariel Miranda looks promising, as Miranda has allowed a whopping eight home runs in 36.1 innings, seven to right handers. He's also allowing righties to post a .331 wOBA against him.

Leury Garcia, CWS vs. SDP ($2,600): Picking on Padres' starter Jered Weaver is beyond prudent, but the White Sox have been so bad offensively, finding a sure option presents a challenge. As such, taking a stab with Garcia makes sense. He's been elevated to the leadoff spot in this series, and has a respectable .354 wOBA against righties.
