Yahoo DFS Baseball: Wednesday Picks

This article is part of our Yahoo DFS Baseball series.

Pitcher

Max Scherzer, WAS at SF ($59): While we were all focusing on the Royals and Padres, the Giants have managed to creep in as the team with the lowest wOBA against right-handed pitching this season. Scherzer boasts a swinging strike rate of nearly 16 percent, and has allowed a hard contact rate of less than 26 percent.

Jaime Garcia, ATL at LAA ($33): I shudder to think what the Angels offense will look like while Mike Trout is on the disabled list with a thumb injury, as they already hold bottom 15 wOBAs from both sides of the platoon. Garcia has used his fastball to great effect this season, and will put his groundball tendencies to work against a team that hits the ball in the air just 33 percent of the time.

Catcher

Welington Castillo, BAL vs. NYY ($15): I am not quite ready to say that Masahiro Tanaka is fixed after a brilliant outing against the A's, as he still holds a -8.1 RAA against the fastball, and has surrendered a 35 percent hard contact rate against righties. Castillo has notched a .342 wOBA against right-handed pitching, while registering a 3.6 RAA against the heater.

First Base

Logan Morrison, TB at TEX ($19): We don't have a lot to go on when analyzing Austin Bibens-Dirkx, but it is worth testing his chin a bit to see if he can survive in a major-league rotation. Bibens-Dirkx has allowed two homers in his 11.1 innings this season to go along with a hard contact rate greater than 36 percent. While its not statistical analysis, there is likely something to be said for the fact that Bibens-Dirkx will make his first major-league start at 32 years old after spending more than a decade in the minor leagues.

Second Base

Whit Merrifield, KC vs. DET ($14): Merrifield is something of a well-kept secret against lefties, having notched a .229 ISO and a .460 wOBA over 35 at-bats this season. Matt Boyd has kept a hard contact rate of 43 percent against his opposite hand, and throws a fastball that has been worth -7.5 RAA over 51.2 innings (10 starts).

Third Base

Nick Castellanos, DET at KC ($9): Ian Kennedy has registered a 2.3 HR/9 rate against righties in 20 innings this season, while allowing a 35 percent hard contact rate over that span. Meanwhile, Castellanos has hit the ball hard at a 46 percent clip against same-handed pitchers through 49 games.

Shortstop

Trea Turner, WAS at SF ($18): Matt Cain has thrown the ball reasonably well for someone whose fastball has registered -8.1 RAA but he may not have much success against the Nationals, who have notched the third highest RAA in the league against the fastball this season. Turner will look to make his mark, having tallied a .200 ISO against righty hurlers.

Outfield

Matt Kemp, ATL at LAA ($20): Kemp has shown great production against the fastball, as evidenced by his 11.7 RAA over 40 games. Jesse Chavez has tallied a -6.6 RAA with the pitch this season, while surrendering a .549 slugging percentage to right-handed hitters.

Melky Cabrera, CWS vs. BOS ($14): Like Tanaka, Drew Pomeranz is a pitcher I will look to target despite a spectacular performance in his last start. Pomeranz holds a negative run value on his curveball, a pitch he throws more than 43 percent of the time. Cabrera has registered a 2.8 RAA against the pitch, and has kept a surprising .238 ISO against his opposite hand.

Aaron Judge, NYY at BAL ($24): Kevin Gausman has not generated a positive run value with any of his five pitches this season. This could mean good things for Judge, who has kept a 9.1 RAA against the fastball to compliment his mammoth .379 ISO versus righty hurlers.
