Yahoo DFS Baseball: Thursday Picks

This article is part of our Yahoo DFS Baseball series.

PITCHER

Corey Kluber, CLE vs. OAK ($50): The A's offense has been notably better lately, but they still struck out at a 23.9 percent clip against right-handed pitching in May. They've been even worse on the road versus righties, whiffing at a rate of 24.7 percent. Kluber is making his first start after a disabled list stint due to a lower back injury, but he's a workhorse that can provide a complete game in any given start. Additionally, in the two starts prior to the game in which he suffered his injury, Kluber scored 44.5 and 28.2 fantasy points, respectively.

Zack Greinke, ARI at MIA ($52): There isn't really a pitcher without some concerns with respect to their matchup Thursday, but Greinke is undeniably one of the better options and is priced like one. He's admittedly been more vulnerable on the road but has tallied 28.6 and 29.6 fantasy points, respectively, in a pair of previous starts away from Chase Field. He also brings upside north of 30 fantasy points in any given outing and faces a Marlins team that, while showing more spark offensively lately, still carries an ordinary .310 wOBA against right-handed pitchers at home.

CATCHER

Yasmani Grandal, LAD at STL ($16): Cardinals starter Adam Wainwright has given up a .343 wOBA, 25.9 percent line drive rate and 37.0 percent hard contact rate to left-handed hitters, along with a 5.15 xFIP to them at Busch Stadium. The majority of the switch-hitting Grandal's offensive success has come against righties, as he's posted a .389 wOBA versus that handedness, along with a 48.4 percent hard contact rate against them on the road. He's also coming off a month of May in which he posted a .391 wOBA and 147 wRC+ over 87 plate appearances.

FIRST BASE

Paul Goldschmidt, ARI at MIA ($27): Goldschmidt and the rest of his D-Backs teammates draw a plum matchup against the debuting Jeff Locke, who gave up a .371 wOBA and 13 homers to righty bats in 2016 along with a 34.9 percent hard contact rate. Goldschmidt has blasted right-handed pitching for a .444 wOBA, .290 ISO and 49.1 percent hard contact rate, and the Marlins bullpen, which could well be heavily involved in this game, is coming off a month of May in which they generated an NL-high 5.17 ERA and gave up 18 extra-base hits (12 doubles, one triple and five homers) to right-handed hitters.

SECOND BASE

Starlin Castro, NYY at TOR ($13): Blue Jays starter Marco Estrada hasn't been a pitcher to really target this season, but Castro's modest price and track record against the right-hander make him an appealing option. Castro boasts a .429 average, four doubles and a triple over 39 career plate appearances versus Estrada, and he owns a .364 wOBA and 32.0 percent hard contact rate versus righties.

THIRD BASE

Jose Ramirez, CLE vs. OAK ($13): After a prolonged slump, Ramirez came alive over the second half of May, posting a .397 wOBA, 151 wRC+, 28.3 percent line drive rate and 31.9 percent hard contact rate in the 13 games prior to Wednesday's action. A's starter Jharel Cotton has yielded a .322 wOBA, four homers and a 5.32 xFIP to left-handed hitters, while the switch-hitting Ramirez has pounded righties for a .500 wOBA, 10.2 RAA, 223 wRC+, 26.8 percent line drive rate and 35.7 percent hard contact rate in 68 plate appearances versus that handendess at home.

SHORTSTOP

Jean Segura, SEA vs. COL ($18): Coming into Wednesday's action, Segura boasted a .376 wOBA and 50.0 percent hard contact rate versus southpaws, and a .381 wOBA overall in May. Rockies starter Kyle Freeland has given up a 37.3 percent hard contact rate on the road to right-handed hitters, while Segura notably boosted his hard contact rate from April's 27.1 percent to a 35.4 percent figure in May.

OUTFIELD

Cody Bellinger, LAD at STL ($21): Wainwright's issues with lefty bats were detailed earlier, while Bellinger owns a .426 wOBA, .455 ISO and 62.5 percent hard contact rate in 36 plate appearances against right-handed pitching on the road and mustered a 44.6 percent hard contact rate overall in May. The Cardinals bullpen has also been vulnerable to lefty bats all season, yielding an NL-high 5.43 ERA and .354 wOBA to left-handed hitters.

Keon Broxton, MIL at NYM ($17): The emerging Broxton brings the potential for double-digit fantasy points and is coming off a month of May where he generated a .367 wOBA, 36.8 percent line drive rate and 36.8 percent hard contact rate. He also posted a .351 wOBA and 37.5 percent hard contact rate against right-handed pitching over 74 plate appearances in May, while the 44.6 percent hard contact rate Mets starter Zack Wheeler surrendered in four May starts represented a notable jump from the 28.0 percent figure he'd allowed in April. The Mets bullpen was also battered again by righty bats in May, giving up a .328 wOBA, seven homers and NL-high 44.1 percent hard contact rate to that handedness during the month.

Chris Young, BOS at BAL ($12): Young boasts a .417 average with a pair of doubles in 12 career at-bats against Orioles lefty Wade Miley, who's surrendered a .338 wOBA, 22.0 percent line drive rate and 37.9 percent hard contact rate to right-handed hitters. Miley also surrendered a .377 wOBA, 22.9 percent line drive rate and 39.8 percent hard contact rate overall in five May starts, while the Orioles bullpen gave up eight homers and a 38.3 percent hard contact rate to righty bats in May. Young has uncharacteristically struggled against lefties this season, but he posted a .367 wOBA overall in May and owns a .364 wOBA and 56 homers versus southpaws over his 11-plus major-league seasons.
