DraftKings MLB: Friday Picks

DraftKings MLB: Friday Picks

This article is part of our DraftKings MLB series.

Pitcher

Carlos Martinez. STL at BAL ($11,300): Martinez has tallied a 9.6 RAA with his fastball, while the Orioles rate as a bottom-10 team against the pitch. It is also worth noting that Baltimore holds just a .313 wOBA against right-handed pitching, good for the eighth lowest mark in the league. Camden Yards appears to be skewing more pitcher-friendly than it has in past years, which could make Martinez a nice alternative for those who want the salary relief and scarcity that comes with fading Max Scherzer.

Joe Biagini, TOR vs. CHI ($6,900): The White Sox are a bottom-5 team when it comes to hitting the fastball, a pitch that rates above average for Biagini according to RAA. The 27-year-old will take his extreme ground-ball tendencies into the matchup against Chicago, a team that has hit the ball on the ground at a 46 percent clip this season.

Catcher

Alex Avila, DET vs. TB ($4,000): Avila has notched an RAA of nearly 12.0 against the fastball and has feasted on righties to the tune of a .331 ISO over 118 at-bats. Erasmo Ramirez has shown solid numbers against both righties and lefties, save for the 40 percent hard contact rate he has kept against his opposite hand over 18 games (six starts) this season.

First Base

Tommy Joseph, PHI vs. ARI ($3,700):Patrick Corbin has developed a reputation as a strikeout artist, so it may surprise some to learn that he has struck out just 16 percent of the right-handed batters he has faced this season. This should allow Joseph to lock on to Corbin's fastball, a pitch that has yielded a -10.4 RAA for the lefty in 2017.

Second Base

Whit Merrifield, KC at LAA ($3,800): Merrifield has flown under the radar as a rookie in 2017, having notched a 6.1 RAA against the fastball and a 34 percent hard contact rate against righties over 142 at-bats. Opposing starter Jesse Chavez's fastball has registered a -7.8 RAA, and he has allowed a .547 slugging percentage to same-handed hitters over 39.2 innings.

Third Base

Kyle Seager, SEA at TEX ($3,700): It is imperative that we choose at least one bat against Tyson Ross, who will make his season debut after recovering from thoracic outlet syndrome. Ross has been smashed for 16 runs over 18.2 innings in his four rehab starts, and has not thrown more than 5.1 frames in the big leagues since 2015. Seager isn't showing quite as much power as he has in recent years but maintains a 43 percent hard contact rate against righty pitchers.

Shortstop

Francisco Lindor, CLE at MIN ($4,500):Nik Turley was roughed up in his major-league debut against the Giants, allowing four runs in just four innings. Turley has always shown good strikeout ability, but holds a career ERA of 4.34 in 197 innings at the Triple-A level. Meanwhile, Lindor has kept a .242 ISO against lefties to go along with a 42 percent hard contact rate over 95 at-bats.

Outfield

Giancarlo Stanton, MIA at ATL ($4,700):Sean Newcomb showed excellent control in his domination of the Mets last week, but I have a hard time believing that someone who walked 186 batters in 348 minor-league innings got it all figured out just in time for his major-league debut. Stanton has destroyed southpaws this season, as evidenced by his unbelievable .590 ISO over 39 at-bats.

Eric Thames, MIL vs. SD ($4,000):Miguel Diaz needs to be viewed as one of the top stack targets of the day, as he has allowed 21 runs (20 earned) in 26 innings this season, while keeping a 14 percent walk rate over that span. Thames' power tailed off a bit in May, but he is back at it this month, having notched a .304 ISO over 46 at-bats.

Dexter Fowler, STL at BAL ($4,400): Four of the five pitches Kevin Gausman throws have registered negative run values this season. This includes the fastball, which clocks in at -6.8 RAA. Fowler has logged a 9.4 RAA against the heater while tallying a .248 ISO against righties.
