Yahoo DFS Baseball: Thursday Picks

This article is part of our Yahoo DFS Baseball series.

Pitcher

Clayton Kershaw, LAD at LAA ($60): Kershaw hasn't been automatic over the past couple weeks, but he's been good enough to justify this price in what looks like a good matchup. Kershaw has picked up four wins in his past five starts, which is no surprise as the Dodgers have the best record in the NL. He's also kept up with the strikeouts as well, posting eight or more in four of his past five starts. The Angels don't strike out at a high rate against lefties, but they have the eighth lowest wOBA against lefties this season.

Michael Fulmer, DET vs KC ($47): The pitching options above Fulmer on this slate all come with too much risk and the ones below just aren't appealing, so I'm left with Fulmer, who has been a little erratic lately but is coming off a solid start. Fulmer recorded eight strikeouts and allowed just one run in seven innings against the Padres the last time out. He also carries a 3.29 ERA, which is actually very good considering the amount of runs scored this season across the league. The Royals have been hot lately, but still carry the fifth lowest wOBA against righties this season.

CATCHER

Alex Avila, DET vs KC ($16): It seems a bit repetitive, but as long as Avila continues to produce against righties, he's going to be on this list. Avila enters with a .455 wOBA against righties this season, which is tops on the Tigers and fifth in the majors. He was at it again last night as well, homering off right-handed starter Ian Kennedy. Righty Jake Junis is the opposing starter for the Royals and he brings a 4.97 ERA with him.

FIRST BASE

Mitch Moreland, BOS vs MN ($19): Kyle Gibson takes the mound for the Twins and while he's somehow managing to stay afloat, it won't be long before he resembles the guy who was demoted earlier in the year. The Red Sox as a whole haven't been great against righties this season, but Moreland has been one of a few exceptions. Moreland enters with a .365 wOBA against righties this season, which is good for second on the Red Sox. He's also homered in three of his past four games against right-handed starters.

SECOND BASE

Eric Sogard, MIL at CIN ($16): Homer Bailey takes the mound for the Reds and he'll hope to improve on a horrendous first start. Bailey has been a decent pitcher throughout his career, but there's obviously something off right now. Sogard is one Brewer likely to take advantage as he enters with a .440 wOBA against righties this season, which is sixth highest in the majors.

THIRD BASE

Travis Shaw, MIL at CIN ($21): Bailey's troubles were mentioned earlier and while I'm hesitant to go with a full stack of Brewers, I do like a couple lefties in Sogard and Shaw. Shaw enters with a .401 wOBA against righties this season, which ranks second on the Brewers and 21st in the majors. Shaw has also homered in three consecutive games, all games started by right-handed pitchers.

SHORTSTOP

Trea Turner, WAS vs CHC ($20): Turner made headlines Tuesday when he stole four bases off the Cubs and with Jon Lester's issues holding runners on, Turner will likely have plenty of opportunities to steal bases. Aside from steals, Turner has a good matchup at the plate as well as Lester has struggled with righties this season. Turner has struggled against lefties this season, but that wasn't an issue for him last season, so a correction should be coming soon.

OUTFIELD

Jose Bautista, TOR vs BAL ($18): Ubaldo Jimenez takes the mound for the Orioles, which means Toronto is in play for a stack. The only problem with stacking the Blue Jays is that they don't have great numbers against righties this season. Bautista is one of the exceptions however, as he enters with a .362 wOBA against righties this season. Jimenez has been so bad this year that I might overlook some season splits in order to stack the Jays.

Aaron Judge, NYY vs TEX ($27): Perhaps I should keep a placeholder for Judge on this list, because day after day, there's simply no reason to keep him off. He's kept his production at an incredibly high level and he's kept his slumps to a minimum. He enters with a .460 wOBA against righties this season and he gets a crack at James Shields. Shields has been terrible since returning from the DL and things are about to get worse against a potent Yankee lineup.

Bradley Zimmer, CLE vs TEX ($14): A quick note: if Lonnie Chisenhall ($19) is starting and Zimmer is not, Chisenhall makes for a good pick in this spot. As for Zimmer, he's second on the team with a .383 wOBA against righties this season and he'll get a righty in Andrew Cashner. Cashner will make his first start since his return from the DL and if his form is the same as it was prior to his DL stint, he's in for a short night. Cashner has allowed four or more runs in three of his five most recent starts.
