Yahoo DFS Baseball: Friday Picks

This article is part of our Yahoo DFS Baseball series.

Pitcher

Jacob deGrom, NYM at STL ($45): deGrom is rolling right now and has had a few extra days rest thanks to Wednesday's rainout and Thursday's off day. He's allowed only three runs combined in his last four starts while striking out 31 in 32.0 frames. Busch Stadium has been a house of horrors for deGrom (11 runs, 24 hits over his last 9.0 innings), but this Cardinals offense isn't that potent, owning a .168 ISO and 97 wRC+ against righties since June 1. The game comes with a modest total of eight, and a pitcher's duel with Carlos Martinez appears to be on the horizon.

Kevin Gausman, BAL at MIN ($31): Don't look now, but Gausman hasn't allowed a run in two consecutive starts, and his scoreless streak stretches back into a third start, spanning 13.0 innings in full. He's increased his strikeout rate, fanning 29 over his last 23.2 frames while the Twins have a 22.0 percent strikeout rate against righties, with four regulars seeing their K rate sit at 28.3 percent or higher. Gausman has been susceptible to big innings, but his recent form suggests he can provide ample return on investment here.

Catcher

Manny Pina, MIL at NYY ($13): With lefty Jordan Montgomery on the bump, Pina seems likely to draw the start over left-handed bat Stephen Vogt. Pina has a more than serviceable .361 wOBA and 119 wRC+ against southpaws, and his .203 ISO gives him a chance at taking Montgomery deep, something that has happened to the Yanks' starter in five straight starts, where he's allowed seven total.

First Base

Ryan Zimmerman, WAS vs. ATL ($14): Zimmerman has cooled considerably, posting a .335 wOBA and .791 OPS in June after .380/.905 in May and .545/1.345 in April, but there's hope for a bounce back in this setting. Braves' pitcher R.A. Dickey has a 6.08 road ERA (against 3.30 at home), where he's allowing same-handed batters to post a .393 wOBA. Zimmerman has enjoyed facing Dickey, going 14-of-39 (.359) with four homers and still carries a .443 wOBA and 175 wRC+ againt righties in Nats Park, hopefully providing some confidence to break out of his funk.

Second Base

Dustin Pedroia, BOS vs. TB ($17): Pedroia's 2-for-4 outing Thursday was his fifth multi-hit game in his last 10 outings. He's only gone hitless twice in that span while driving in 10 runs. His .338 wOBA and 105 wRC+ against same handedness on the road is respectable, as is his 11-of-27 (407) with two homer career line against Jake Odorizzi.

Third Base

Adrian Beltre, TEX vs. LAA ($19): Beltre represents a bit of a safe pick, entering Friday having reached base at least twice in five-straight outings, though not driving in a run. He owns a steady .390 wOBA and 141 wRC+ at home against same handed pitchers, and Angels starter Rickey Nolasco is allowing a .394 wOBA to righties on the road.

Shortstop

Trevor Story, COL vs. CWS ($14): Story has been much more successful against lefties to date, owning a .392 wOBA and 125 wRC+ compared to .267/43 against righties. He's also gone deep just one fewer time against southpaws than righties in 111 fewer at bats. White Sox starter Derek Holland has been plagued by the long ball this year, surrendering 17 over 15 starts, all of which have come to righties and 11 of which have come on the road, where he owns a 5.70 ERA.

Outfield

Aaron Judge, NYY vs. MIL ($27): Judge's splits (.460 wOBA, 192 wRC+, .357 ISO and 1.123 OPS) against same-handed pitchers speak for themselves. But the matchup here is too inviting. Brewers' starter Junior Guerra has a 6.19 road ERA, where he's allowing a .442 wOBA to righties. Further, he's allowing a 41.7 percent flyball rate to same-handed batters on the road, and 30 percent of those flies are leaving the yard. Judge has a 38.0 percent fly ball rate and 54.9 percent hard hit rate in that scenario.

Nelson Cruz, SEA vs. OAK ($16): Cruz slugged his first homer since June 4 Wednesday, and there's hope for more Friday against A's starter Sean Manaea. Cruz owns a .492 wOBA, 218 wRC+ and .382 ISO at home against southpaws. Manaea has done a good job limiting longballs, allowing only eight in 15 starts, but Cruz has touched him up twice in only eight prior meetings.

Matt Holliday, NYY vs. MIL ($13): This comes with the obvious caveat that Holliday is activated from the DL prior to Friday's game, as expected. He hasn't been Judgeian against righties, but Holliday has been more than serviceable in this spot, posting a .365 wOBA, 128 wRC+ and .230 ISO against righties in Yankee Stadium. He's only lifting the ball at a 32.9 percent clip, but 20.8 of those are leaving the yard.
