FanDuel MLB: Sunday Value Plays

FanDuel MLB: Sunday Value Plays

This article is part of our FanDuel MLB series.

PITCHER

Jimmy Nelson, MIL at TAM ($8,900): It's difficult to go against Chris Archer, especially in cash formats, as the other top options have challenging matchups. The thought here is that Nelson can match Archer. This is a game with the lowest total on the board at just 7.5. Tampa has a top-10 offense against right handers (.329 wOBA, 108 wRC+) but also strike out at a 25.0 percent rate. Nelson's 26.3 percent fan rate gives him some upside, which can help offset the fact that he has a 4.66 road ERA (as opposed to 2.43 at home).

CATCHER

Kevan Smith, CWS at BOS ($2,100): Smith comes with next to no risk at this low cost and non-premium position. He's hit safely in each of his last five starts, and somewhat surprisingly ranks second on the team against righties with a .345 wOBA and 115 wRC+.

FIRST BASE

Eric Hosmer, KAN vs. SEA ($3,400): Hosmer entered Saturday just 2-of-16 in August after batting .379 in July, but he'll have a nice opportunity to break out of his slump Sunday. Mariners starter Marco Gonzales allowed five runs and six hits over just 3.1 innings in his first start, and Hosmer has been solid against same-handed pitchers, owning a .349 wOBA and 116 wRC+, good for second among Royals regulars.

SECOND BASE

Javier Baez, CHC vs. WAS ($3,000): Baez rides a modest four-game hit streak into Sunday, a stretch that has seen him go 5-for-15 with two homers, five RBI and four runs scored. He's posted a .376 wOBA and 131 wRC+ against same-handed pitchers since the All-Star break, and I'm happy to take some secondary Cubs bats at a discounted rate against Nats' starter Erick Fedde, who allowed seven runs on 10 hits and two walks in just 4.0 innings last time out and had a 5.56 ERA at Triple-A prior to his first start of the year.

THIRD BASE

Cory Spangenberg, SDP vs. PIT ($2,800): Taking a small gamble against Pirates' starter Jameson Taillon seems wise, as Taillon has allowed 17 runs and 20 hits over his last 6.2 innings while striking out only four. Following the activation of Yangervis Solarte, the Padres have a plethora of infield options, so Spangenberg is no sure thing to start, but if he does he owns a .452 wOBA, 184 wRC+ and 1.081 OPS against righties in the second half.

SHORTSTOP

Tim Beckham, BAL vs. DET ($2,800): Beckham has been on an absolute tear during the first few days of August, entering Saturday 13-of-20 with three doubles, a triple, three homers, five RBI and six runs scored. His .338 wOBA and 113 wRC+ against righties are respectable, and it figures to play nicely against Tigers' starter Anibal Sanchez, who is allowing a .393 wOBA and .944 OPS to righties on the road.

OUTFIELD

Justin Upton, DET at BAL ($4,200): Upton has enjoyed himself at Camden Yards this weekend, having homered in three straight contests while driving in eight. He entered Saturday with a .383 wOBA and 141 wRC+ against righties and has a 1.021 OPS in 33 career at-bats against Ubaldo Jimenez, who has a 7.27 home ERA.

Andrew McCutchen, PIT vs. SDP ($3,900): On paper, this is a near-perfect situation for McCutchen, whose price has dipped under $4,000 due to some feast-or-famine outings since the break. Nevertheless, he owns a stellar .492 wOBA, 1.234 OPS, .458 ISO and 210 wRC+ against southpaws this year, and his last home run came back on June 30, against Sunday starter Clayton Richard. Richard has not faired well on the road, or against opposite-handed batters, allowing a .408 wOBA and .981 OPS when those two scenarios combine.

Leury Garcia, CWS at BOS ($3,100): Stacking White Sox bats is not easy, nor for the faint of heart. But BoSox starter Doug Fister has a 5.15 ERA and has been woeful against lefties, allowing a .429 wOBA and only striking them out at 15.1 percent rate. Meanwhile, Garcia leads all White Sox bats with at least 100 plate appearances against righties with a .351 wOBA and 119 wRC+.
