DraftKings MLB: Sunday Picks

This article is part of our DraftKings MLB series.

PITCHER

Carlos Carrasco, CLE vs. NYY ($9,700): Most DFS players wouldn't immediately think of an asset facing the Yankees when trying to decide on a pitcher, but the Bombers have been a bottom-10 team since the start of July according to wOBA, having notched a strikeout rate greater than 24 percent over that span. Meanwhile, Carrasco has registered a 9.8 RAA with his slider, while the Yankees have tallied the fourth-lowest RAA in the league against the pitch.

Jose Urena, MIA at ATL ($6,000): The Braves' offense has been trending down after a strong start to the season, and now holds a bottom-10 mark against right-handed pitching according to wOBA. Atlanta has a minus-15.6 RAA against the slider, a pitch Urena throws more than a quarter of the time.

CATCHER

Willson Contreras, CHC vs. WAS ($5,000):Erick Fedde was torched for seven runs over four innings in his major league debut last week. While it may be a bit hasty to call Fedde a stack target based on one bad performance, it is worth noting that he tallied a 5.57 ERA and a below-average strikeout rate over 21 innings at Triple-A Syracuse this season. The 24-year-old may be a prospect to watch in the future, but players shouldn't be shy about selecting bats against him now, as he has yet to show the ability to pitch at the highest level.

FIRST BASE

Matt Carpenter, STL at CIN ($3,900): Carpenter's power numbers have cooled of late, but he has still notched an 18.0 RAA against the fastball and .367 wOBA against right-handers in 284 at-bats this season. Meanwhile, Homer Bailey has logged a minus-6.3 RAA with his fastball to go along with an 11.08 ERA over 13 innings at home.

SECOND BASE

Brian Dozier, MIN vs. TEX ($4,900):Nick Martinez has struck out just 12 percent of the right-handed batters he has faced this season while allowing 11 homers over 45.1 innings. Dozier had one of his best power months of the year in July (.208 ISO) and has come out blasting in August, hitting two homers over the first four games.

THIRD BASE

Rafael Devers, BOS vs. CWS ($4,400): Devers has shown power at all levels in the minor leagues and is continuing the trend with the big club, having notched a .625 slugging percentage over 40 at-bats. Meanwhile, Mike Pelfrey has been hit hard by lefties in 2017, allowing a .525 slugging percentage over 40.1 innings.

SHORTSTOP

Jordy Mercer, PIT vs. SD ($3,500): Opposing starter Clayton Richard has allowed a .554 slugging percentage and 36.0 percent hard contact rate against righties over 99.2 innings this season. The Pirates have plenty of right-handed bats, but Mercer represents a cheap option, having notched a 42.0 percent hard contact rate against southpaws.

OUTFIELD

Jim Adduci, DET at BAL ($3,100): Adduci is showing some promise this season, as he currently holds a .197 ISO and a hard contact rate of better than 53.0 percent against righties over 61 at-bats. The Tigers don't have many southpaw bats left to take advantage of Ubaldo Jimenez, who has allowed a .624 slugging percentage against his opposite hand over 48 innings.

Lorenzo Cain, KC vs. SEA ($4,700):Marco Gonzales is another young pitcher who may not be ready for prime time, as he allowed three home runs over 3.1 innings in his only major league outing this season. While he has thrown the ball well at Triple-A Memphis, he has shown suspect walk and strikeout rates at various points in his career. This is good news for Cain, who has tallied a .192 ISO and a 40.0 percent hard contact rate against lefties.

Scooter Gennett, CIN vs. STL ($4,200): Gennett has swung the bat well against lefties, logging a .289 ISO and 41.0 percent hard contact rate over 225 at-bats. On the other side, Adam Wainwright has been pounded on the road this season, as evidenced by his 6.88 ERA over 51.0 innings.
