Yahoo DFS Baseball: Tuesday Picks

Yahoo DFS Baseball: Tuesday Picks

This article is part of our Yahoo DFS Baseball series.

Tuesday's 16-game MLB slate begins with the first game of a Marlins-Phillies doubleheader. With the large available selection, there's no shortage of underpriced players ready to provide strong bang for the buck. These are the guys that make up Tuesday's top value plays:

PITCHER

Brock Stewart, LAD at PIT ($25): Stewart has posted a 1.64 ERA and 1.05 WHIP in 22 innings this season, earning himself a spot-start here in place of Yu Darvish (back). It's also helpful that he's facing a Pirates offense that ranks 25th with 4.28 runs per game, though the righty's 6.14 K/9 suggests his strikeout upside is limited. Still, his ability to keep the opposition off the board and the high likelihood of a win pitching for the team with the league's best record makes Stewart worth a look at the minimum price.

Patrick Corbin, ARI at NYM ($37): Corbin has been on a roll of late, turning in three consecutive quality starts while posting a 25:4 K:BB and 1.27 ERA in 21.1 innings over that span. Maintaining that elite form shouldn't be difficult here against a Mets team that ranks 28th with a .301 OBP against left-handed pitching. Citi Field's 26th-ranked park factor is also a major upgrade for pitchers over Chase Field's second-ranked 1.17 mark.

CATCHER

Kurt Suzuki, ATL vs. SEA ($15): Mariners starter Marco Gonzales is the most logical choice to stack against since he has an 8.44 ERA while failing to pitch five full innings in any of his first four starts. Most of the southpaw's struggles stem from his .461 wOBA allowed to right-handed hitters, which is why Suzuki should be able to find success here. The veteran catcher has put up a tremendous .514 wOBA in 40 plate appearances this year, making him a dangerous option despite the small sample size.

FIRST BASE

Anthony Rizzo, CHC at CIN ($25): Reds starter Homer Bailey was shelled for six earned runs over 5.2 innings by the Cubs in his previous start and his 8.44 ERA and 2.04 WHIP suggest the righty's unlikely to fare much better in this rematch. Rizzo produced a home run and a double in that contest and should once again come up big judging by his .370 wOBA against righties and recent move into the clean-up spot.

SECOND BASE

Yoan Moncada, CWS vs. MIN ($10): Moncada will be happy that his shin splints healed in time for this appetizing matchup with Twins righty Kyle Gibson. The switch-hitting second baseman has fared much better from the left side, posting a .371 wOBA against righties and just a .166 mark when facing southpaws. Between those splits and Gibson's .376 wOBA allowed to batters from the left side, this is the perfect time to slot the affordable Moncada into your lineup.

THIRD BASE

Jedd Gyorko, STL vs. SD ($10): Gyorko's an excellent value play at $10 given his proficiency against southpaws. He owns a .365 wOBA in that split this year and brings tremendous power upside after having mashed 47 home runs overall since the start of last season. Padres starter Clayton Richard is coming off a three-hit shutout against the Phillies, but still has an underwhelming 4.84 ERA and 1.53 WHIP.

SHORTSTOP

Dansby Swanson, ATL vs. SEA ($9): Swanson is hitting .074 higher against lefties compared to righties, making Atlanta's shortstop of the future a strong play against Gonzales. The 2015 first overall pick has responded well to his recent demotion and recall from Triple-A, posting three multi-hit performances while reaching base in eight consecutive contests. Swanson's still priced at just $2 above the minimum despite the recent improvement, making him a strong value pick given this ideal matchup.

OUTFIELD

Matt Olson, OAK at BAL ($14): Olson brings tremendous power upside, having hit seven balls out of the yard in just 69 plate appearances against right-handed pitching. It wouldn't be surprising to see him launch another one against starter Ubaldo Jimenez, who has allowed a .401 wOBA to batters from the left side over a 252 at-bat sample.

Kole Calhoun, LAA vs. TEX ($14): Calhoun's having a down year by his standards, but he's still providing a healthy combination of power and patience with 16 home runs and a 10.2 percent walk rate. Those two strengths coincide with the weaknesses of Rangers righty Tyson Ross, who sports an ugly 1.28 HR/9 and 6.59 BB/9. Ross' numbers have been even worse on the road, where he has an 8.50 ERA over 18 innings in four starts.

Mike Trout, LAA vs. TEX ($28): Ross has struggled indiscriminately, as his .396 wOBA allowed to fellow righties is actually substantially higher than his mark against lefties. Trout has predictably fared well against all comers with a .474 wOBA in righty-on-righty matchups, so another strong performance can be expected in this favorable situation at home. With many strong affordable options available at other positions, this is a good opportunity to use the best hitter in baseball without sacrificing depth.
