Yahoo DFS Baseball: Friday Picks

Yahoo DFS Baseball: Friday Picks

This article is part of our Yahoo DFS Baseball series.

Pitcher

Lucas Giolito, CWS vs. SF ($40): Giolito is looking every bit the part of the top prospect he was once considered, having allowed only five runs over 20.0 innings and just one in his last 14.0 frames, while striking out 18. Those trends look sustainable Friday against a limited Giants offense that has ranked last nearly all year against righties with a .298 wOBA and –77.7 wRAA.

Marcus Stroman, TOR vs. DET ($43): We've reached a point in the season where there are a handful of teams that have traded away their top bats and are merely going through the motions daily. Detroit fits that mold with J.D. Martinez and Justin Upton playing a large part in the below average .315 wOBA and 93 wRC+. Without them, there's nary a bat for Stroman to fear, and his 2.55 home ERA and 20.3 strikeout rate give him upside, as does an increased win percentage with the Tigers countering with Buck Farmer, who has allowed eight runs in his last 8.2 innings.

Catcher

Travis d'Arnaud, NYM vs. CIN ($9): The Mets fall into the mold of a team ready for the season to end, so I'm not willing to take too great a risk on their offense against a very hittable Amir Garrett. As such, d'Arnaud offers a cheap buy in at a non-premium position, and he's have plenty of success against southpaws this year, posting a .399 wOBA, 151 wRC+ and .963 OPS.

First Base

Justin Smoak, TOR vs. DET ($18): Truth be told, there wasn't an ideal matchup against the aforementioned Farmer, who's been surprisingly more vulnerable to same-handed bats, while Smoak has been better as a righty against lefties. Still, Smoak owns a respectable .366 wOBA, .282 ISO and 127 wRC+ against righties, second among Jays' regulars to Josh Donaldson, and comes with an $8 savings.

Second Base

Ozzie Albies, ATL vs. MIA ($15): Albies has been a favorite of mine, largely due to a decreased price and unluckily low BABIP compared to his hard-hit ball rate. But all of those factors appear to be catching up with each other, and the price tag is about as high as I'm willing to go until Albies' power develops. He has been on fire since August 18 however, collecting 27 hits in 20 games overall while posting a .376 wOBA, 131 wRC+ and respectable .887 OPS.

Third Base

Jake Lamb, ARI vs. SD ($17): Lamb's prowess against opposite-handed arms is well documented (.391 wOBA, .272 ISO, 136 wRC+ if you needed a reminder.) That should play tremendously against Padres' starter Jordan Lyles, who allows lefties to post a .424 wOBA and 1.014 OPS against.

Shortstop

Jean Segura, SEA vs. LAA ($15): Angels' starter Ricky Nolasco has been crushed by right-handed bats away from home to the tune of a .425 wOBA and 1.030 OPS. That plays right into Segura's wheelhouse, as he's been dynamic against same-handed arms at home, posting a .383 wOBA, 144 wRC+ and .171 ISO.

Outfield

Tommy Pham, STL vs. PIT ($20): Pham has now missed three straight starts due to a sore shoulder but has appeared as a pinch runner. Though no sure bet to play, he's worth holding a space for until lineups are announced. For the year, he owns a .397 wOBA and 147 wRC+ against righties, and his injury came at an inopportune time, as he was cooking over his last 10 games, posting a .565 wOBA, 258 wRC+ and 1.400 OPS since August 23. Pirates' starter Trevor Williams has been at his worst against same-handed bats on the road, allowing a .370 wOBA.

Matt Olson, OAK vs. HOU ($18): Olson is essentially Joey Gallo-light, as he can be incredibly feast or famine, but for now, he's finding success through power and strikeouts. He's been at his best at home against opposite-handed arms, which bodes well Friday against Collin McHugh. Olson has a .432 wOBA, 176 wRC+ and .463 ISO in this scenario while striking out 32.8 percent of the time. McHugh, meanwhile, has a 4.88 road ERA against just 0.54 at home, while allowing a .392 wOBA.

Mitch Haniger, SEA vs. LAA ($15): Given the struggles of Angels' starter Ricky Nolasco on the road we previously mentioned, I'm liking a small Mariners stack of secondary bats. Haniger carries a .362 wOBA and 129 wRC+ at home against righties, and he's 13-of-29 since August 30.
