FanDuel MLB: Sunday Value Plays

FanDuel MLB: Sunday Value Plays

This article is part of our FanDuel MLB series.

PITCHER

J.A. Happ, TOR vs. DET ($7,700): There appears to be a little volatility at the top of Sunday's pitching slate, and Happ may not be immune to that, as he's allowed one run in five of his last seven starts, but five runs in each of his other two during that stretch. However, he offers some cost savings and faces a limited Tigers lineup. Detroit surprisingly has a league-high .359 wOBA against lefties on the year, but that success came before they traded away their core. They've slowed down tremendously in September, posting just a .318 wOBA, 95 wRC+ and 20.4 percent strikeout rate. And with Anibal Sanchez opposing Happ, he figures to see solid run support.

CATCHER

Buster Posey, SFG vs. CWS ($3,400): I never enjoy paying for the top-priced option at this position, but Posey offers solid stability with some upside in this matchup. He's riding a nine-game hitting streak, and has a .345 wOBA, 115 wRC+ and only 11.7 strikeout rate against righties. He's going to put the ball in play against Carson Fulmer, who's allowed seven runs and three homers in six innings this season.

FIRST BASE

Freddie Freeman, ATL vs. MIA ($4,200): Another top-priced player at his position, Freeman has bunches of upside against Odrisamer Despaigne, who has struggled mightily on the road, owning a 6.57 ERA while allowing opposite-handed bats to post a .451 wOBA and 1.092 OPS. Freeman counters with a .446 wOBA, 178 wRC+ and .313 ISO against righties. The Cardinals' Matt Carpenter ($3,800) looks like a nice buy if you're looking to save a few.

SECOND BASE

Joe Panik, SFG at CWS ($3,200): Wait, two Giants bats in this column? It's not ideal, but Panik's inclusion is the result of his current form and the complete lack of second-tier options at the keystone. Panik is raking in September, batting .469 (15-of-32) on the heels of a .306 August. He's been a better option all season on the road as well, where he sports a .389 wOBA against righties compared to .283 at home.

THIRD BASE

Josh Donaldson, TOR vs. DET ($3,700): This comes with the obvious caveat that Donaldson returns to the lineup, as he's missed two games due to illness. Assuming he does, there's no reason to mess around with the rest of the Blue Jays' lineup against the aforementioned Sanchez. Donaldson sports a .384 wOBA and .265 ISO against righties, while Sanchez is allowing a .469 wOBA and 1.152 OPS to same-handed bats on the road.

SHORTSTOP

Dansby Swanson, ATL vs. MIA ($3,300): In the interest of diversity, I didn't want to include Swanson after I did so Saturday, but shortstop offers so few choices that taking Swanson and his current form make plenty of sense. He's drawn five walks in his last two games, to go along with his new found prowess for stroking line drives. Since his August 9 recall, Swanson has a .374 wOBA and .130 wRC+.

OUTFIELD

Giancarlo Stanton, MIA at ATL ($4,400): There's a lot of chalk in this column, but perhaps the savings suggested in J.A. Happ can allow for a plethora of big bats. Head-to-head success likely carries much more weight when we're talking about facing R.A. Dickey and his knucleball, and Stanton has gone 9-for-26 (.346) with two homers, two doubles and four RBI against Dickey. Dickey also has a 31.9 percent fly ball rate allowed at home, which should give Stanton a chance to lift a few balls.

Tommy Pham, STL vs. PIT ($3,500): Pham hasn't managed a hit in his two games since returning from a minor shoulder injury, but he sports a nice .393 wOBA, 144 wRC+ and .912 OPS against righties. Pirates starter Ivan Nova hasn't been the same pitcher in the second half, posting a 6.38 ERA (3.21 in first half) while allowing a .352 wOBA to righties since Aug. 4.

Lorenzo Cain, KAN vs. MIN ($3,200): It wouldn't be right to not include at least one option against Minnesota's Bartolo Colon, who despite allowing just six runs over his last 19.1 innings, has a 6.06 ERA. Cain has been solid all season, owning a .352 wOBA and 117 wRC+ against righties, but he's surging to the finish, following a .368 wOBA in August with an early .468 wOBA in September.
