| Recent Blog Post: Long Game Extra: Live-tweeting the Auction |
| My home AL-only keeper league auction is today (12 teams, 5x5, pretty standard roto ultra rules with the addition of an in-season salary cap), and I figured I might as well live-tweet the thing. Why? For reasons!
If you want to follow along, my Twitter handle is @AntonSirius. I'm starting it out with $173 (only three teams have more, with the big stack carrying $208), and the following roster:
C: Salvador Perez $3B, Tyler Flowers $3C
1B: Eric Hosmer $17Y
SS: Eduardo Nunez $6C
CI: Chris Carter $8B
OF: David Murphy $4B, Jonny Gomes $1B
P: Yu Darvish $31B, Matt Moore $10B, Brett Anderson $2B, Felix Doubront $2B
Minors: Bubba Starling, Michael Choice, Jonathan Schoop
(Note: for long-term contracts we bump the letter designation to the end of the alphabet so that they expire at the end of their 'Z' season.)
As you can see, I'm set at catcher and don't have to worry about scarcity there, but I've got no closers so I'll have to pay full retail for a couple. Third base is also an issue, as there are only three good ones (Miguel Cabrera, Adrian Beltre and Evan Longoria) available. All the young middle-tier guys are protected, so the drop-off in talent after the big three is STEEP. If I don't land one of them, I could be looking at a Matt Dominguez as the fallback. That's scary.
Nunez was the only really difficult choice, but with Jeter out for a bit, the other injury issues the Yankees have and me lacking steals, $6 didn't seem like much of an overpay and I could easily see him going for more at auction. The alternative would have been something like Eric Sogard at $1, and that seemed like a much bigger risk.

Recommendation |
Alexi Ogando (P) TEX |
5/24/2013 |
| Ogando (biceps) will throw off flat ground Saturday and complete a bullpen session Monday, the Fort Worth Star-Telegram reports. |
It sounds as though Ogando won't need a rehab start before returning to the rotation, defying what would probably be the normal protocol with his sort of injury situation. However, the Rangers have somehow managed to tread water with Ogando, Matt Harrison, Colby Lewis and Nick Tepesch all missing starts for various lengths of time this season, but they'd obviously be inclined to bring back Ogando as soon as possible if he can convince them he's healthy after a bullpen session. |
|
David Murphy (OF) TEX |
5/24/2013 |
| Murphy is not in the starting lineup Friday against the Mariners, the Dallas Morning News reports. |
Though he has been given more leeway against left-handed starters this season and has delivered relatively even splits, Murphy will get the night off with Joe Saunders on the mound for the Mariners. Jeff Baker, who has batted .298/.350/.512 for his career against left-handers, will get the start in place of Murphy. |
|
Mike Olt (3B) TEX |
5/24/2013 |
| Olt's vision problems have improved, and he has been cleared to resume baseball activities, Anthony Andro of FOX Sports Southwest reports. |
The Rangers have been puzzled by Olt's vision issues, but the good news is he has reached the point where he can resume hitting. He will report to the Rangers' extended spring training complex, but it's not clear how much time he will need before he is cleared to resume playing with Triple-A Round Rock. |
|
Nick Tepesch (P) TEX |
5/23/2013 |
| Tepesch (finger) completed a bullpen session Thursday without any issues and seems all set to start Sunday against the Mariners, FOX Sports Southwest reports. |
Although he was scratched from Wednesday's turn with a blister, Tepesch has progressed sufficiently since that time and should be deployed as normal against the Rangers. Despite unexpectedly winning a rotation spot out of spring training, Tepesch has turned in some quality results, delivering a 3.98 ERA and 1.32 WHIP through eight starts. |
|
Colby Lewis (P) TEX |
5/23/2013 |
| As expected, Lewis (forearm) will move his rehab to Triple-A Round Rock, where he'll start Saturday, the Fort Worth Star-Telegram reports. |
Lewis came through his bullpen session unscathed and will advance to Triple-A. He may require multiple starts with Round Rock after showing diminished velocity during his most recent rehab appearance at Double-A Frisco. |
|
Mark Teahen (OF) TEX |
5/23/2013 |
| Teahen agreed to a minor league contract with the Rangers on Thursday, MLB.com's T.R. Sullivan reports. |
Teahen posted just a .571 OPS in 22 Triple-A games before being released by the Diamondbacks, but he will get a fresh start with the Rangers. Expect him to report to Triple-A Round Rock. |
