Kelly signed a contract Thursday with Real Betis of the Spanish ACB league, international beat writer David Pick reports.
ANALYSIS
After spending his first three years in Los Angeles with the Lakers, Kelly moved to Atlanta for the 2016-17 campaign, but struggled to receive much playing time. He took part in just 16 games, averaging 1.6 points and 1.1 rebounds across 6.9 minutes. After failing to see much interest on the open free agent market this offseason, the sharpshooting big man will head overseas in an attempt to restore his value.

The Lakers declined to extend Kelly a qualifying offer following three unimpressive seasons with the team, making the forward an unrestricted free agent in July. Touted as a potential stretch four at the NBA level after coming out of Duke in 2013, the 25-year-old has averaged 6.5 points in 20.5 minutes per game over 147 career appearances while shooting a horrific 38.1 percent from the field and 31.3 percent from three-point range. Understandably, few teams were interested in bringing Kelly aboard on a guaranteed contract this summer, so he waited until September before agreeing to a non-guaranteed training camp invite from the Hawks. He doesn't have a good shot at making the Hawks' 15-man roster and will likely head to the D-League or overseas once camp concludes.
After breaking out in his rookie season under Mike D'Antoni, Kelly regressed under new coach Byron Scott, until the end of the season, when Scott bumped Kelly's court time as the Lakers sat their early-season starters for stretches of games. Kelly finished the season playing 24 minutes per game in his 52 games, which was actually higher than his rookie campaign, but it was buoyed by 28 minutes a night after the All-Star break. Even though his minutes were higher, Kelly's statistical output faltered, averaging just 6.4 points, 2.8 rebounds, 1.8 assists, 0.6 steals, 0.5 blocks, and 0.9 three-pointers, while shooting just 34 percent from the field, 34 percent from three-point range, and 83 percent from the free-throw line. Posting a PER of just 8.6 last season, along with a box plus/minus and win shares lower than his rookie season, Kelly is a not a good fit in the current system employed by Scott. With Julius Randle returning from his tibial fracture, along with the acquisitions of Roy Hibbert, Brandon Bass, and to a lesser extent, Larry Nance Jr., Kelly will find it tough to get minutes this coming season which would be comparable with his output in his first two seasons.
Ryan Kelly was a surprise contributor last season, after being selected 48th overall in the 2013 NBA Draft. He started 25 games last season for Mike D'Antoni's Lakers squad and was impressive in stretches as a big man who could knock down the three-ball. Kelly averaged 8.0 points, 3.7 rebounds, 1.6 assists, 0.5 steals, 0.8 blocks, and 0.8 three-pointers in 22 minutes per game through 59 games last. He shot 42 percent from the field on 6.3 attempts and 82 percent from the line on 2.3 attempts. His game seemed to suit D'Antoni's game plan perfectly, but with a new coach, Byron Scott, in town, Kelly's role is a little less defined. With Randle and Boozer also joining the team, Kelly will find it hard pressed to match his 22 minutes per game from his rookie season and looks set to ride the pine for most of the season.
Kelly has been rehabbing his way back to action after offseason foot surgeries. He sat out most of the preseason but made his debut against the Warriors in China. Despite being buried in the depth chart, Kelly has shown an ability to knock down threes. That being said, Kelly's role this season is expected to be minor, as he attempts to gain additional minutes in the Lakers' stretch power forward role.
