With the Bulls both tanking and dealing with injuries last season, Grant was able to set a career high in minutes per game in 2017-18 (22.8). He significantly improved his skills as a distributor, seeing his assists per 36 minutes rise from 4.7 over his first two seasons to 7.3 last year. However, his scoring ability remains a work in progress, as he shot only 41.5 percent from the field, 32.4 percent from deep and 74.5 percent from the free-throw line, marking a decline in true shooting percentage from 2016-17. This year, the Notre Dame product should have another shot at seeing significant run, as he was traded to Orlando -- a team that dealt away starting point guard Elfrid Payton at last season’s trade deadline. Grant’s only other real competition on the rebuilding Magic is veteran D.J. Augustin, whose workload could fall by the wayside late in the season if it becomes clear the Magic are out of the playoff picture. Where Grant will end up in Fantasy drafts will likely be determined by owners’ optimism regarding his workload. If there’s a belief he will see around 30 minutes per night, selecting him with a late-round flier in a standard league could be justified. Otherwise, it may be best to utilize a wait-and-see approach, keeping an eye on Grant while he’s on the waiver wire. For reference, per 36 minutes last season, he averaged 13.2 points, 7.3 assists, 3.7 rebounds, 1.3 steals and 1.3 threes.
Grant found himself apart of an ever-changing point guard rotation under coach Fred Hoiberg in his first season with Chicago. Rajon Rondo dealt with some injuries and occasionally fell in Hoiberg's doghouse, allowing Grant to pick up 28 starts over the 63 games he played in. Still, Grant didn't really do much in terms of Fantasy production while working in a larger role and he finished the year averaging just 5.9 points, 1.8 rebounds and 1.9 assists across 16.3 minutes. Grant will be back with the Bulls for a second season heading into 2017-18. While Rondo is no longer around, the Bulls brought in Kris Dunn in the Jimmy Butler trade, so Grant will likely open the campaign behind him as a backup. He'll also have to fend off Cameron Payne for point guard minutes as well, meaning Grant's role shouldn't expand much moving forward.
Grant arrived in Chicago this offseason as part of the Derrick Rose trade, and he'll battle for the backup point guard job behind veteran starter Rajon Rondo. As a rookie, Grant appeared in 76 games for the Knicks, averaging a modest 5.6 points, 2.3 assists and 1.9 rebounds while shooting 39.4 percent from the floor. Those numbers certainly weren't eye-popping, but Grant remains an intriguing project player, despite the fact that he turns 24 in October. At 6-foot-4, Grant has the size to defend both backcourt spots, which could ultimately solidify his place in the rotation, but he struggles as a shooter and knocked down just 22 of his 100 three-point attempts last season. He'll compete with fellow newcomers Isaiah Canaan and Spencer Dinwiddie for minutes behind Rondo, with Canaan, a much stronger outside shooter, posing the bigger threat of the two. Rondo is expected to shoulder a heavy workload, however, so Grant is unlikely to play enough minutes to be more than a deep bench player in most single-season fantasy formats.
Selected 19th overall this summer and traded to the Knicks on draft night, Grant is coming off a senior season at Notre Dame that saw him average 16.5 points, 6.7 assists, 3.0 rebounds, and 1.7 steals in 37 minutes per game across 38 appearances for the Irish. Ultimately, that production led to Grant being named a Consensus First-Team All-American at the point guard position, where he figures to help the Knicks mightily moving forward. Standing an athletic 6-5, Grant has great size for a guard in coach Derek Fisher's scheme and should offer an improvement on Knicks' veteran Jose Calderon defensively. Furthermore, Grant is gifted with outstanding court vision and displayed deep shooting range in college. Combined, that skill set could enable Grant to play at both guard spots for the Knicks as the season unfolds. While Arron Afflalo will almost certainly start at shooting guard, Grant is expected to push Calderon and Langston Galloway for the Knicks' starting point guard gig. Even if he doesn't win the position right away, Grant clearly has the most upside of that group, so fantasy owners would be wise to monitor Grant's early progress, as his matured game could make him an impact rookie performer.
