Oberto is a solid role-player type who should get spot minutes at center for the Wizards as necessary.
Oberto started 64 games for the Spurs last season but averaged just 20.1 minutes a game. Oberto averaged 4.8 points and 5.2 rebounds while leading the team in field goal shooting at 60.8 percent. With the expected time share, and Oberto's statistical contributions, expect limited value on a fantasy roster.
Oberto was more comfortable in his second season with the Spurs. His minutes jumped to over 17 per game, and he led the Spurs in field goal percentage (56.2). Oberto is more comfortable at the offensive end than Elson, but is still not expected to contribute a great deal on that front. As with Elson, the time share limits the value that Oberto can have on a fantasy roster.
Oberto can play either the power forward or center position but appeared to struggle in finding his role with the Spurs, especially on the defensive end, in his first year with the club. He averaged only 8.3 minutes per game and produced 1.7 ppg and 2.1 rpg. Expect these numbers to increase especially if Elson and Butler struggle. Oberto was known as a good offensive player in Europe, but struggled with fouls (1.5 per game in 8.3 mpg).
Oberto was signed in the offseason after 12 years of professional basketball experience in Argentina, Greece and Spain. His NBA learning curve is not expected to be steep, so we expect Oberto to step right into the rotation and compete for minutes at center with Nazr Mohammed and Rasho Nesterovic, while being the primary backup to Tim Duncan at power forward. He’s got some offensive skills in the low post, can pass the ball and was considered a good defender in Europe.
