RotoWire's Preseason Outlooks

2016-17

There was no outlook written for Shannon Brown.

2014-15

Brown signed a one-year contract with the Heat in the offseason. He'll spend his ninth season in league playing a limited role off the bench. With both the Knicks and the Kings last season, he averaged 2.2 points, 1.0 rebound, 0.3 assists, and 0.4 steals through 29 games. At nine minutes per contest, the 28-year-old didn't leave much evidence as to why he would deserve a spot in the Heat's rotation this season and will likely provide limited contributions in Miami as a result. On top of that, he'll be stacked up against Reggie Williams and Tyler Johnson all season in practice to see which of the three deserves the honor of backing up a backup in Danny Granger. Dwyane Wade will steal most of the spotlight at shooting guard this season, leaving guys like Brown with little room for relevancy.

2013-14

Brown's career-high average of 24 minutes per game should remain steady. His points, however, should dwindle for a second straight season. Last year, he came off the bench to spell both guards and has no reason to expect anything differently in 2013. The primary difference will be sharing the ball with Bledsoe, who is expected to play some point. A below-average shooter, Brown is a strange fit.

2012-13

Brown is a sparkplug combo guard who is equally capable of putting up highlight dunks and making his coaches pull their hair out. He is at his best when he's coming off the bench, where he can use his top-notch athletic abilities to wreck havoc on other team's backup guards by applying intense defensive pressure and relentlessly attacking offensively. Fantasy wise he won't contribute a lot, but should be good for about 10 points per game and a steal if you're in a pinch.

2011-12

The Suns’ biggest signing this offseason, Brown will likely act as the team’s sixth man. He’s an explosive athlete with ability to play point and shooting guard. Brown isn’t a great shooter, but has three-point range, and his defensive abilities will mean he’ll see the floor quite a bit for a defense-challenged Suns team.

2010-11

Brown has always possessed elite level athleticism, but that has never translated to much production. He is solely a scorer, and does so in spurts, but not nearly on a consistent enough level to warrant a fantasy look. Should Kobe Bryant miss time, Brown’s value will skyrocket, but otherwise he’ll be little more than a bench player battling for minutes.

2009-10

An aggressive attacker towards the rim, Brown shoots a high percentage from the field and has shown a decent long-range shot from time to time.

2008-09

Brown’s looking at very limited minutes behind Jason Richardson and Matt Carroll, but that could increase because he defends better than Carroll. Brown enters training camp as long shot to be part of the back court rotation, but could unlock some of his potential under new coach Larry Brown. He’s an athletic player who can create his own shot, but has size problems at the two. He needs to improve his ball handling to be considered a combo guard.

2007-08

Brown was selected in the first round of the 2006 draft to help bolster the Cavs' backcourt, but a December injury limited him to just 23 games. He'll spend training camp pushing to regain playing time, but with Larry Hughes and Daniel Gibson entrenched at the guard spots, Brown will be no more than a role player.

2006-07

Brown, along with second-round pick Daniel Gibson, was selected to help bolster the Cavs' backcourt. His defensive ability represents an immediate boon, and some scouts see his ability to shoot free-throws as an indication of good mechanics that should transfer to shooting from the field. With Flip Murray out of the picture and Larry Hughes not fully recovered from his finger injury, Brown could be given every opportunity to make an immediate impact. The fact that he can play both guard positions increases his chance to see more minutes as the season goes along.
