RotoWire's Preseason Outlooks

2016-17

Subscribe now to see our 2016-17 outlook.

2015-16

Arthur re-signed with the Nuggets on a two-year deal this offseason. In 58 games last season, he averaged 6.6 points, 2.9 rebounds, 1.0 assists, and 0.8 steals in 17 minutes per game while shooting 40 percent from the field, 24 percent from three-point range, and 78 percent on his free throws. The reason Arthur played in just 58 games was because of a calf injury that hampered him all season long. The most noticeable stat in his line from last season is 1.9 three-point attempts he averaged per game after never attempting more than one per game in his previous five seasons. The percentage was lacking though at only 24 percent, as he seemed to be forcing up some three-pointers at certain points in games when the team was down. It's clear he wants to make three-pointers a part of his game, but if he doesn't clean up the percentage, the coaches won't allow it for long. Arthur's role this season will be as a stretch-four who can spare some minutes for Kenneth Faried and Danilo Gallinari. With youngsters coming in like Nikola Jokic, Arthur may lose some minutes, and his role may be diminished under coach Mike Malone this season.

2014-15

Darrell Arthur should be a regular contributor off the bench for the Nuggets this season, but he may not get as many minutes as he did in 2013-14 due to the impending healthy returns of JaVale McGee (knee), J.J. Hickson, and Danilo Gallinari (knee). With Kenneth Faried emerging as the seemingly unquestioned starter at power forward, it'll be interesting to see how the Nuggets' high-potential depth affects the rotation this season. Arthur seems like he may end up being the odd man out if things go well for the Nuggets and the team can stay healthy.

2013-14

After coming over from the Grizzles in a trade this offseason, Arthur will be battling for playing time at both power forward and center. Arthur will be in a backup role, but if he can be a versatile player for this Nuggets team, he should be able to find the minutes to contribute somewhere.

2012-13

Arthur missed the entire 2011-12 season after he tore his right Achilles’ tendon in training camp and underwent surgery in December. The Grizzlies must believe he is healthy, as they signed him to a three-year deal in early-August and had no qualms about trading Dante Cunningham to the Timberwolves. A healthy Arthur should serve in a role similar to the one he played in 2010-11 – one of the first big guys off the bench, with an increased role if injury befalls either Zach Randolph or Marc Gasol.

2011-12

Arthur logged the most minutes of any non-starter on the Grizzlies with 1609, as he was generally the first guy off the bench when Zach Randolph or Marc Gasol needed a break. Not surprisingly, Arthur set career highs in points, field goal percentage, blocks and assists. He also made it to the free throw line more times than he had in the previous two seasons combined, which is a positive development for a big guy who can hit 80+ percent of his free throws. He should continue in a similar role for 2011-12, and he would be a must-own if something happened to either Gasol or Randolph.

2010-11

Arthur started 63 games for the 2008-09 Grizzlies, but his starting role came to a screeching halt when the team acquired Zach Randolph the following offseason. A torn pectoral made 2009-10 something of a lost season for Arthur, as he did not return to the court until February and was out of shape for the majority of the 32 games he did play. He averaged 7.9 points. 5.3 rebounds and 0.9 steals in eight April games, which were likely his healthiest contests of the year, and should take on a significant bench role this season.

2009-10

Arthur had some decent games as the Grizzlies' starting power forward in 2008-09, but the then-rookie still only averaged 5.6 points per contest. He will lose significant minutes to the likes of Zach Randolph and Hasheem Thabeet this year, which will make him more of a role-player with little fantasy upside.

2008-09

Arthur had a rough time on draft night - he started the day as a potential lottery pick but fell into the late first round before being traded three times. His unusual offseason continued into September, when he was booted from a rookie symposium after reportedly getting caught with marijuana, and may face a fine and/or suspension following that incident. But when Arthur gets into a game, he should show off a good mid-range jumper. He is also pretty quick for his size, which should help him on defense. He improved in each of his two collegiate seasons on a good Kansas squad, and that progression should continue in the pros, as long as he can stay out of trouble.
