Aldrich was waived by the Hawks on Tuesday, Chris Vivlamore of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports.
ANALYSIS
Aldrich was merely a camp body for the Hawks and wasn't expected to make much of an impact if he did surprisingly make it through the final roster cuts. Instead, Aldrich is now expected to head overseas and is finalizing a deal to play in China, according to freelance reporter Jeff Goodman. If he plays well with his Chinese club team, there's certainly a chance he's able to land a spot in the NBA next season.

Aldrich was a deep reserve for the Timberwolves last season. In the 62 games he appeared in, the seventh-year man posted 1.7 points and 2.5 rebounds across 8.6 minutes per game. His role has a chance to diminish even further heading into 2017-18, however, as the additions of free agent Taj Gibson and rookie Justin Patton could usurp his workload. Barring major injury to one or more frontcourt players, Aldrich will likely be Fantasy irrelevant in seemingly every format next season.
Aldrich will open the upcoming season as the top backup to Karl-Anthony Towns, a role that may rarely afford him more than 20 minutes a game.
Aldrich saw his first glimmer of fantasy relevance last season, as he started 16 games for the injury-depleted Knicks. The rarely-used fifth-year veteran center saw a career-high in minutes played, averaging 16 minutes per game through 61 games. During this playing time, he averaged career-highs of 5.5 points, 5.5 rebounds, 1.2 assists, and 1.1 blocks per game. While Aldrich showed promise last season in New York, he should see a more limited role after signing a new deal with the Clippers. Aldrich will serve as backup to DeAndre Jordan, who is coming off his first All-NBA season and holds the longest active games played streak in the NBA at 322. With the frontcourt likely to be dominated by the dynamic duo of Jordan and Blake Griffin, Aldrich may see few minutes on the court each night. Barring an injury to Jordan, it appears as though Aldrich may not be a particularly relevant fantasy option this season.
A sparingly used reserve center, Aldrich accounted for just 2.0 points, 2.8 rebounds, and 0.7 blocks in seven minutes per game through 46 outings last season. The 2010 lottery pick bounced between the NBA and D-League last term but was re-signed by the Knicks this offseason to maintain a physical presence inside. While Aldrich played with new Knicks coach Derek Fisher to begin his career in Oklahoma City, the big man is unlikely to receive enough minutes to contribute anything other than minimal fantasy value this season.
Aldrich didn't get off the bench much last season, playing just 26 games at 6.7 minutes per. The 11th overall pick in 2010, Aldrich is fast approaching bust status. He's a good rebounder (12.9 per 48 minutes), but his offensive game needs much polish. Aldrich will have a chance to prove his worth in the early going, though, as oft-injured Kendrick Perkins is out for the preseason. He is the frontrunner for the job and could secure a consistent regular-season role with a big training camp.
Aldrich appeared in 18 games for the Thunder in his rookie season, averaging 1.0 points and 1.9 rebounds in 7.9 minutes a game. He also started 21 games for the Thunder's D-League affliate, the Tulsa 66ers, where he averaged 10.3 points, 8.6 rebounds and 2.6 blocks in about 30 minutes a game. The Thunder's frontcourt rotation is set, so Aldrich likely will once again find minutes hard to come by. Development, though, is most important, as Nazr Mohammed is on a one-year contract and Nick Collison is 31.
The 11th-overall pick in the 2010 Draft, Aldrich was sent with Morris Peterson to Oklahoma City in exchange for the 18th and 21st selections. While he doesn't have a ceiling as high as some other members of his draft class, Aldrich should still manage to be a defensive presence-a fact that will likely manifest itself in decent block totals. In his junior year with Kansas, he averaged 3.5 per game while playing just under 27 minutes. He'll contend with Serge Ibaka for minutes at the five.
