2013
Though Brown has yet to log an official minute with the Pistons, he's been evaluated by the organization for the last two seasons while suiting up for their D-League affiliate, the Grand Rapids Drive. In 25 games with Grand Rapids a year ago, Brown averaged 18.3 points (on 50.3% shooting), 5.8 assists, 5.5 rebounds and 2.1 steals in 33.3 minutes per contest, with those numbers earning him a call-up to the Suns. He didn't have much staying power in Phoenix, however, appearing in just eight games before he was let go. Brown will now rejoin the Pistons on a non-guaranteed contract for training camp, where he'll have to battle Ray McCallum for the third-string point guard job. By virtue of his familiarity with the Pistons' coaching staff, Brown enters camp as the favorite to land that role, but he'll still need to perform well in order to beat out McCallum. Should he indeed make the roster, Brown likely wouldn't be a regular in the rotation with starter Reggie Jackson and top backup Ish Smith set to absorb most of the minutes at point guard.
After signing a contract with Minnesota in the middle of the 2014-15 season, Brown returns to battle for a roster spot for 2015-16. Last year in 29 games as a fill-in for the short-handed Timberwolves, Brown averaged 4.2 points, 2.4 rebounds, 3.1 assists, 1.0 steal, and 0.2 three-pointers in about 19 minutes per game. Brown's efficiency was not up to par, as he averaged 42 percent from the field, 21 percent from three-point-range, and 63 percent from the free-throw line. Brown's less-than-stellar on-court contributions are concerning, but further complicating matters for him is the way the depth chart seems stacked against him. At 6-5, he has the size to contribute at either guard spot, but he'll have to fight off Ricky Rubio, Tyus Jones, and Andre Miller, as well as Kevin Martin and Zach LaVine, in order to claim a role at either spot. Throw in the fact that Brown's contract is the only non-guaranteed one on the Timberwolves roster, making him a prime candidate to get cut during training camp, and it's tough to like much about Brown's fantasy prospects in 2015-16.
Brown, the 52nd overall pick in the 2013 NBA Draft, is physically impressive for an NBA point guard prospect, standing in at 6-5, 186. However, he is an average athlete and appeared to regress in some areas during his junior season at North Carolina State, in which he recorded 12.4 points (on 41.9 percent shooting), 7.2 dimes, 4.3 rebounds, and 2.0 steals in 34.2 minutes per outing. Considering how deep the T-Wolves are at point guard, Brown will more than likely toil in the NBA's D-League in his rookie year.
