Vin Baker

Joined the Clippers in Feb. after the All-Star break. If he has anything to offer, Baker could backup Chris Kaman.

Baker enters the 2004-05 season much as he did last year – with questions regarding his bout with alcoholism. That’s what got him released by the Celtics last season after a promising November and December gave way to erratic play. He will begin the season as the backup center behind Nazr Mohammed, who is not a lock to hold the starting job. Should Mohammed falter, the Knicks could turn to Baker, but it's more likely Kurt Thomas would step in and keep Baker on the bench for support minutes.

For the second straight season, Baker enters camp as a true enigma. His problems with alcohol are well known, but the Knicks were convinced enough to sign him to a two-year deal. He'll primarily back up Nazr Mohammed at center and provide insurance at power forward if Kurt Thomas is eventually traded. The Knicks are likely to give Michael Sweetney more playing time this season, which will limit Baker's exposure at the four.
