At this point in his career, Barry is a one-dimensional three-point shooter, but an elite one when he's on the floor. It's possible he could even start for the Rockets if McGrady's not back, but it's just as likely he gets dealt to a contender who needs his accuracy from long range.
The Rockets brought in Barry for his long-range shooting, and he'll knock down threes and hit his rare free-throw attempts. Expect Barry to see most of his 15 minutes or so per game at the two, though he might occasionally bring up the ball.
Just when it seemed that Barry was finished, he produced a solid 2006. Barry shot 47.5 percent from the floor, but most importantly, shot 44.6 percent from the 3-point line and made 1.7 three-pointers per game. Barry will continue to be a valuable member to the Spurs roster as long as he can hit from beyond the arc. Barry could be a useful waiver wire pickup for teams needing 3-point shooting in deeper leagues.
Barry is nearing the end of his career as all his numbers except field goal percentage were down from the previous season. Barry is getting fewer minutes and with Matt Bonner being a younger, taller version of the 3-point shooting Barry; look for his numbers to continue to decline.
Barry appears to be getting crowded out as the Spurs brought in Nick Van Exel and Michael Finley during the offseason. Both players can deliver scoring off the bench -- Barry's role in 2004-05 -- so we are wary entering this season. Van Exel could see more time at the point, but the addition of Finley could result in less minutes for Barry.
Barry may not produce as much as he did last season with the SuperSonics, as he's likely to play 25-30 minutes a game backing up Tony Parker and Manu Ginobili. Barry is an excellent all-around player, capable of double-digit scoring, high shooting percentages, and 5-plus assists and rebounds per game; however, he's not likely to get the minutes to be a top-shelf fantasy option. If Ginobili or Parker should go down, jump on Barry right away; as it is, Barry may be able to help you as the 11th or 12th man on your roster. And Definitely look at Barry if your league uses three-pointers made as a category, as Barry is likely to give you two or three per game even in his limited role.
Barry thrived in the point-guard role following the trade of Gary Payton last season. He averaged 10.3 points, 5.1 assists, 4 rebounds and 1.5 steals per game while shooting 40.3 percent from 3-point range. While he successfully steered the ship after the Payton trade, don't expect Barry to steer your fantasy team. He can be a nice addition, but not a main weapon. He'll qualify at PG and SG, adding versatility.
