Wright doesn’t bring much to the table, especially from a fantasy perspective. He takes a lot of threes (43 percent of his shots last year) but doesn’t make a ton of them (33.5 percent), and gives next to no help in the rebounding, assist or steal departments.
The former Nets first-round pick averaged a career-best 7.3 PPG last season and did even better in the second half, racking up 9.6 PPG through February and March. While the offensive improvement is nice he's still much better at the other end of the court and is developing into a poor man's Bruce Bowen, rather than an NBA regular. This is probably his last chance to try and break through as a starter.
Considered a throw-in in the Kidd trade, Wright may make a push for the starting shooting guard job. Wright showed flashes last year as he averaged 11.1 points for the first month of last season while receiving 33 minutes per game. Keep in mind that even if Wright were to win the job, he'd be the fourth option at best.
Wright enters his third season with high expectations, especially after a somewhat solid playoff performance. However, we would be wary of him from a fantasy perspective. Wright will never be much of a scorer (only 43.8% from the field), and his rebounds (7.4) and assists (2.3) per 48 minutes were also not terribly impressive. He also does not possess any three-point range to speak of, nor can he shoot free throws (60%). Wright can defend and will earn playing time on those merits, but should earn no fantasy consideration.
Wright was the Nets first round selection in the 2005 NBA Draft. He was a very productive college player, being named Big 12 Freshman of the Year. Wright never did find his groove in his rookie season with the Nets, in part because he could not find his shooting stroke. Wright brings athleticism and defensive tenacity to the two spot and is best served learning as much as he can from Vince Carter for another season.
Wright looks to prove his worth as a first round draft pick in his initial season with the Nets. The problem is that he'll have to convince head coach Lawrence Frank that he deserves to see minutes over Vince Carter and Richard Jefferson which just isn't going to happen. Wright may be more of a future hopeful for the Nets and should only see minimal playing time as he learns from his teammates.
