Hayes has accepted a position in the Nuggets' front office, Mike Richman of The Oregonian reports.
ANALYSIS
After getting cut by the Clippers in training camp last fall, Hayes quickly latched on with the Rockets, but appeared in just two games before getting released in November. Hayes was unable to find work after that and appears to have retired from playing the game competitively, given his decision to work in a front office role. The 33-year-old, who forged an 11-year career in the NBA as a 6-foot-6 power forward/center, will likely have solid wisdom to impart on the Nuggets' collection of young big men.

An undersized, unathletic center who survives on guile and experience, Hayes joined the Raptors in the Rudy Gay trade and helped provide some battle-tested experience to a young roster. Playing in 61 games between Sacramento and Toronto, Hayes' numbers were modest (2.2 points and 3.4 rebounds in 12 minutes per game while shooting 43 percent from the floor and an out-of-character 80 percent from the free-throw line). Now that he's on the wrong side of 30, his career seems just about ready to draw to a close after 10 NBA seasons. The Raptors feature a pair of young centers ahead of him on the depth chart in Jonas Valanciunas and Lucas Nogueira, and the club will keep Hayes around to impart what lessons he can to the duo and help turn them into polished pros before he rides off into the sunset, or at least to another organization in need of his particular skill set.
Hayes' numbers have been trending down, but the Kings lack other players who can function as a center. His time on the floor fell to 16 minutes per game last season, bringing with it a fall to 4.0 rebounds and only 2.7 points per outing. We are now several years removed from the prime of Hayes' career, and while he will continue to earn playing time, expect continued decreases in his per-minute production. Hayes will be more important for his ability (or lack thereof) to mentor fellow Kentucky alum Cousins than for his court production. Unfortunately for fantasy managers, "mentorship" is still not a widely used fantasy category.
The undersized Hayes will be the primary backup behind DeMarcus Cousins this upcoming season. He has always been known for his defensive stubbornness, soft hands for a big man, and a high basketball IQ. Those attributes will help Hayes contribute in a real basketball sense, but won’t help fantasy teams unless one of the starters goes down due to injury.
The under-sized Hayes was brought in by the Kings to be the versatile defensive stopper he was in Houston. And while that role is valuable in a real basketball sense, it isn’t very helpful in fantasy. With starting minutes he will provide low scoring, boards, and a decent amount of assists for a center, but not much else.
An undersized center who will play excellent defense and help out on the boards. But he won't help anyone's fantasy team.
An elite defensive big man, Hayes can guard almost anyone in the post, using his solid lower body and quick feet to establish position and keep scorers away from the basket and out of their comfort zone. Hayes can rebound a bit, but he lacks the height to block a lot of shots and contributes little on the offensive end.
Hayes is around to do the dirty work. He'll play defense on fours and fives, hustle after loose balls and pull down rebounds. He's not going to contribute offensively, though and will fight for minutes behind Luis Scola and Yao Ming.
At 6-6, 238, Hayes is undersized for a power forward and lacks the athleticism to block shots. But he plays good defense in the low post and blocks out well enough to bring in rebounds. Hayes doesn't have much of an offensive game, so he'll be around to do the dirty work for 20 minutes per game.
Hayes will spell Juwan Howard at the power forward spot and will set screens, play defense and rebound.
