Category Strategy: Categorical Pick-Ups for Week 15

This article is part of our Category Strategy series.

Each week, this article highlights players who are widely available in standard leagues who can help in specific roto categories. While each player highlighted can help in a specific category, there's no guarantee for production in other areas.

POINTS

Wayne Ellington, SG

Over the last two games, Ellington has been the Lakers' go-to scorer, averaging 25.5 points and two three-pointers in 41.3 minutes per game. There is no telling how long he will keep seeing this much run, but with Nick Young representing the only other healthy high-volume scorer on the team, Ellington seems poised to be an excellent fantasy option in the second half of the season. He has been a very efficient scorer, shooting 46.2 percent from the floor, 38.9 percent from behind the arc and 80 percent from the charity stripe. If Ellington can keep up these rates, he could win a lot of fantasy leagues this season thanks to the injuries all around him. This makes him the top pickup in all formats this week.

REBOUNDS

Kris Humphries, PF

Humphries makes an appearance here on an annual, and sometimes monthly basis. When he gets at least 25 minutes per game, he grabs enough rebounds to be owned in most category formats. Over his last four games, he is averaging 12.5 points and 13.5 rebounds in 30.4 minutes per game. Those numbers should not come as a surprise given his playing time over that stretch. He will likely settle back into a 24-28 minute-per-game role,

Over his last four games, he is averaging 12.5 points and 13.5 rebounds in 30.4 minutes per game. Those numbers should not come as a surprise given his playing time over that stretch. He will likely settle back into a 24-28 minute-per-game role, but even then, his rebound rate is strong enough to be of use in deeper leagues.

ASSISTS

Dennis Schroder, PG

As I've said many times, assists are tricky to acquire in-season without a trade, so sometimes it's best to just grab a high-quality backup, take his solid production in limited minutes and hope for an injury to the starter. Obviously I'm not hoping for Jeff Teague to get hurt, as I own him all over the place, but were he to sustain an injury, Schroder has proven more than capable of stepping in and doing a solid job as a starter. He has 13 assists while averaging 26 minutes per game over the last two contests, and while that won't be sustained, it demonstrates what he is capable of. Additionally, if the Hawks have their playoff seed locked up prior to the end of the season, it would not be surprising to see Teague's minutes curtailed in preparation for the playoffs.

STEALS

Courtney Lee, SG

Lee is one of those players who really does not have a weakness. His shooting percentages are excellent, and he plays solid defense. The Grizzlies have the second-best record in the Western Conference, and Lee is a big reason for that, even though he rarely gets the proper credit. He is averaging one steal per game and 1.2 thefts over his last five. That certainly may not seem very significant, but in deeper leagues, his lack of weaknesses make him worth rostering, and steals will be a category he contributes in.

BLOCKS

Jon Henson, C

Henson's name routinely gets brought up here, as he often doesn't see enough minutes to stand out in other categories, but the blocks are always there when he is on the court. He has a blocked shot in 12 straight games and averaged 1.9 per game in January. His field-goal percentage is also excellent (58.8 percent), but Henson is only seeing 20.4 minutes per game over his last five despite injuries all over the frontcourt in Milwaukee, so his points and rebounds will lag behind other notable fantasy bigs.

THREE-POINTERS

Tim Hardaway, SG

It's a little surprising how low Hardaway's ownership is considering he is one of the few players who can score on the Knicks, and a potential Carmelo Anthony shutdown in the coming weeks would pave the way for him to hoist to his heart's content. Hardaway has 11 three-pointers in his last three games, and while his 33.9 percent success rate on the season suggests he maybe shouldn't be attempting so many shots from long range, it's clear that he seems to think of himself as a very capable shooter. He is strictly a three-category guy (points, three-pointers and free-throw percentage), as he is also shooting less than 40 percent from the field this year, but there are no signs that he will curtail his shot attempts anytime soon.
