NHL Playoff Observations: Pens seize the day

Just a few things that caught my eye:

  • Joe Thornton vs. Evgeni Malkin. I wouldn't exactly put it in the class of the Undertaker vs. Shawn Michaels in Wrestlemania 25, but I did like what I saw. I wonder if Geno would yank Jumbo's beard if given a do-over.
  • Matt Murray was good. Damn good. But Martin Jones was flat-out excellent. He kept the Sharkies in the game early when they really didn't deserve it.

  • 15-4. That's the number of shots from the first period. The Sharks were lucky to escape down just two. And they barely showed up for 20 minutes total. They have to be better.
  • Patrick Marleau, WTF were you thinking? You'd notched the game-tying goal just about six minutes earlier and then you leave your brain on the bench. Head hits ARE NOT ok. #suspension
  • Justin Schultz had a great first period and actually set up one of the goals. Who knew???
  • Bryan Rust = John Druce? Rust got his fourth goal in the last three games, but he still has a long way to elevate to Druce status.
  • Nick Bonino has 16 points in 19 playoff games -- that's good enough to sit tied for second in postseason scoring for the east coast waddlers. Yes -- tied with Sidney Crosby.
  • Speaking of Sid -- he was the best man on the ice. Strong. Fast. Fantastic. He still has a long way to go to improve the beard, though.
  • Speaking of beards -- Brent Burns was a beast. Two more points. Too bad he lost his stick on the winning goal. That's what forced him into the corner, leaving the hapless Paul Martin to miss the puck in front of the net.
