Though it's highly unlikely, Nova could go winless for the rest of the season and his call-up was still the biggest risk/reward move of the 2010 off-season. His 11th win in the last 12 starts, Nova (2 BB, 4 K) stayed strong, scattering three hits over seven innings. Morrow (6 IP, 4 H, 3 ER, 8 K) was no schlep himself either. Jeter ends up scoring the game winning run on Robinson Cano's shallow single to centerfield. Soriano and Rivera were in a shutdown mood again. Clearly Gardner (1-3, R, 2 RBI, BB) had a big night as well.

And the Andrew Miller-experiment has come full circle. I'm not sure anyone looked past this performance when he landed with Boston. While Miller (1.1 IP, 5 H, 6 ER, 4 BB, K) was horrendous, another young pitcher making his way this season is Derek Holland. Holland (7 IP, 2 H, 6 K), who despite some erratic behavior at times, has looked as good as some of the A.L.'s elite pitchers. Andrus (2-2, 2 BB, 4 R, 2 RBI) and Murphy (4-5, R) were the cogs for Texas tonight. Good new for Boston, Fenway set an MLB record for 700 consecutive sellouts.

Britton (6 IP, 4 H, 2 ER, 3 BB, 6 K) shows he may turn into a money pitcher, facing one of the most dominating lefties (Price) in the game. While Price yielded as many hits as Britton and struck out nearly double of Britton's, it was the extra inning that may cost Price (7 IP, 4 H, 3 ER, 3 BB, 11 K). With the bases-loaded in the top of the seventh, J.J. Hardy (1-4) singled Mark Reynolds (1-3, BB, R) and Robert Andino (0-3, BB, R) for the game-winning hit.
-Evan Longoria (1-4, 2 RBI, K) knocked in the only Rays runs in the bottom of the first inning.

It just wasn't Danks' (4.2 IP, 9 H, 8 ER, 2 BB, 4 K) night. Verlander (7.1 IP, 7 H, ER, BB, 6 K) on the other hand made only one mistake to Flowers in the eighth inning. Jackson went 3-5 (K, 2 R, 2 RBI), lifting his average over .250.

Both managers intended this to be a nice pitcher's matchup in Hotlanta. Neither Chad Billingsley (4 IP, 9 H, 5 R, 3 ER, 3 BB, 3 K) nor Brandon Beachy qualified for a decision, but the line scores speak the story of a great Dodgers comeback that featured a five-run seventh inning off Vizcaino (0.1 IP, 4 H, 5 ER, 2 BB, K). Atlanta's lineup featured five two-hit performances, including Alex Gonzalez (2-3, R, RBI, BB), who may be feeling the heat after the Jack Wilson waiver deadline deal. Even when the Marlins beat the Phillies, they still lose. Though Philly gets outhit 9-7 tonight, they manage to outscore Florida 4-1 in the final five innings. Mayberry (1-3, R, 2 K, 3 RBI). Shane Victorino went 2-4 (BB) and crossed the plate twice as the Phillies win their fifth in a row. Omar Infante and Logan Morrison each had a two-hit night in the loss. Oswalt (6 IP, 8 H, 3 ER, BB, 7 K) was solid in the win.

Perhaps Dempster (6.1 IP, 7 H, 3 ER, BB, 9K) went out for one too many pitches (121) this afternoon. The Pirates got the best of him in both the third and seventh innings. The Pirates first two batters (Alex Presley and Josh Harrison) went a combined 5-8 with two runs scored and an RBI. Though he didn't outlast Dempster, or even stuck out more batters, Burres (5.1 IP, 5 H, ER, BB, 5 K) pitches very well for a win in his first start of the season.

As the award for the player in most need of a uniform change? Koskue Fukuodome 3-4 (2 R), who has had five three-hit nights in just over a month in Cleveland. Nevermind the fact that neither pitcher had a 'quality start', both Chen (6 IP, 8 H, 5 ER, BB, 3 K) and Masterson (7 IP, 7 H, 4 ER, BB, 4 K) have a punch-for-punch night.

While St. Louis scored in six of their nine innings at the plate, Cincinnati managed to score 10 of their eleven runs in three innings. Eleven hitters in total had at least two hits tonight, most of the usual suspects (Phillips, Votto, Bruce, Furcal, Jay, Pujols and Berkman) and Freese's (3-5, R, 2 RBI) three-hit night. Once again, that re-tooled Cards (3 IP, 6 H, 5 ER, BB, 2 K) bullpen = epic fail. Both Cueto (5 IP, 8 H, 5 ER, 2 BB, 2 K) and Carpenter (6 IP, 8 H, 6 ER, BB, 5 K) were pedestrian at best.

For five and a third, Lucas Harrell (3 H, 2 BB, 4 K) owned Milwaukee. And while Greinke (6 IP, 9 H, 2 ER, 2 BB, 6 K) goes home with the win, at least Harrel doesnt get stuck with the loss as the Brewers go on to explode for all eight of their runs in the final three innings. Fielder (4-4, BB, 2 R, 2 RBI) beast-mode. Astros 3-4-5 hitters grab two-hits a piece in the loss. Houston's pen? Eight runs -including two homeruns- on seven hits over 3.2 innings-pitched.

After some great, unrewarded efforts in the first half of the season, it appears Jason Vargas may be holding a grudge. The odd part is Vargas got a run in each of the first two-innings, but could not hold on. While Vargas (5 IP, 5 R, 4 ER, 4 BB, 4 K) wasn't as terrible as his last [9 ER] start, he just could not keep up with Moscoso (7 IP, 5 H, ER, BB, 6 K). Hideki Matsui (2-4, BB, 3 R, 3 RBI) and Scott Sizemore (2-3, 2 BB, R, RBI) lead the way for the Athletics. Justin Smoak goes (2-4, K) in the loss.

Quick poll,who picked up Millwood for a spot start tonight? Milwood scattered seven hits over seven innings, fanning eight Padres. Jonathan Herrera (3-5, 2 K, 2 R, RBI) provides the most punch in an offensively shy battle. Harang (7 IP, 5 H, 2 ER, 7 K) did manage a quality start.

Although the Angels kept notching a run here, a run there, they never recovered from Chatwood's (3.2 IP, 5 H, 6 ER, 5 BB, 3 K) hellish fourth inning. Pavano (6.2 IP, 7 H, 4 R, 3 ER, 4 K) on the other hand, had things under control. Danny Valencia (3-5, BB, R, 2 RBI) and four other Twins hitters have two or more hits tonight. Erick Aybar (R, RBI) and Howie Kendrick (2 R, RBI) each had a two-hit night in the loss.

June 30th, 2007, that's the last time Carlos Beltran (4-4, R, 3 RBI) had a four-hit night. The first season of his entire, over-paid, Queens years. Yup, it's nights like these Brian Sabean and company had in mind when they acquired Beltran at this year's deadline. And the Giants didn't even after to pay him $119 million dollars over seven years. So how do you show up a night like Beltran's? You go to the mound like Cain (8 IP, 5 H, 2 ER, 4 BB, 3 K), who took control from the get go.

During very uncertain times, Dickey is proving to be a silver lining in the 2011 season. With a sub-4 ERA, he's not flashy, but he's dependable as he nears 200 innings-pitched for the season. Again, not phenomenal, but Dickey (6 IP, 9 H, 3 ER, K) got the job done against the Nats tonight. Meanwhile the Mets beat up Detwiler (7 H, 6 ER, 2 K) for three innings.
