I nominate Carl Everett for the worst offseason signing award. He is awful. Beyond awful. Four reasons that support his candidacy:
1. The Money
$4M for a player on the downside of his career who struggled with the injuries the past couple of years? And you don't even get any defense out of him.
2. Poor Skills
From '01-'05 he slugged .361 vs. lefties with a .674 OPS. Not exactly the kind of numbers one envisions from a DH.
3. Ripple Effect on the Club
Because Everett can't hit lefties, the team traded a top-10 prospect for a right-handed bat to platoon at DH.
4. Performance
Since June 1, his numbers are astonishingly bad:
.179/.228/.316 vs. RH
.143/.200/.143 vs. LH
How is it possible that the Mariners keep running this guy out there? He's quite possibly the worst everyday player in baseball. His RC/27 is 3.03, fifth worst in baseball. The bottom four (Angel Berroa, Ronny Cedeno, Yadier Molina, Adam Everett) at least provide decent to excellent fielding.
