The Worst Offseason Signing

I nominate Carl Everett for the worst offseason signing award. He is awful. Beyond awful. Four reasons that support his candidacy: 1. The Money $4M for a player on the downside of his career who struggled with the injuries the past couple of years? And you don't even get any defense out of him. 2. Poor Skills From '01-'05 he slugged .361 vs. lefties with a .674 OPS. Not exactly the kind of numbers one envisions from a DH. 3. Ripple Effect on the Club Because Everett can't hit lefties, the team traded a top-10 prospect for a right-handed bat to platoon at DH. 4. Performance Since June 1, his numbers are astonishingly bad: .179/.228/.316 vs. RH .143/.200/.143 vs. LH How is it possible that the Mariners keep running this guy out there? He's quite possibly the worst everyday player in baseball. His RC/27 is 3.03, fifth worst in baseball. Soriano to Mariners?

According to various reports, the Mariners have a "strong interest" in Alfonso Soriano. (See here and here.) I'm not seeing it. The Mariners are in no position to trade a top prospect or two for a "rent-a-player." Yeah, they're only four games back (going into Monday), but does anyone seriously believe this mediocre-at-best team has any legit playoff shot? Soriano, a free agent at season's end, isn't likely to stay in Seattle. He wants to play second base and the Mariners have an All-Star second baseman. And he wants tons of cash. The Mariners might have the salary space, but I don't think it's necessarily a given considering they will have more than $56M tied up in their six highest-paid players next year.
