SEASON ON THE STINK
It's hard to say which is more depressing: watching "When the Levees Broke," or the Cubs.
Switching back and forth from the terrific Spike Lee documentary on Hurricane Katrina, to "baseball," I witnessed a no-hitter by Carlos Zambrano through the first five innings and then tuned in to see the Cubs flounder in extras. I missed the four errors committed by the Cubs but kept my fingers off the remote long enough to see Ryan Dempster blow another save. It's not often you see a walk-off walk.
All this I believe is tied to the demise of my Cubs' hat, which is rendered useless by a broken strap. Coincidentally, this is when the Cubs' five-game losing streak began. Granted, the season ended many months ago but this officially ends the Cubs' season for me. Everyone on the team has given up, and now so have I. (I throw in my broken hat.)
I look forward to the college football season and to next year's Ken Burns' documentary: "When My Cubs' Hat Broke."

Hats Off to the A's
Haven't heard much talk about them on the board this season, but what's up with the A's? Jeff knows I don't like them, but I have to tip my cap to what they've done this season. They lose free agents every year, yet they're quietly getting it done again, right up there with the Red Sox and Yankees in record. Add a banged-up Chavez and almost no Harden, and it's pretty impressive. Is it me, or is the media undercoverng their success this time around?

Johnny Damon on the Spot.
Say what you will about David Ortiz and Derek Jeter. Johnny Damon is turning in an MVP campaign. If he stays hot for another week, he'll be on pace for a season of .300, 125 R, 30 HR, 30 SB, 100 RBI. Not to mention his ability to post a career year under the microscope. After all, in the off season, Damon was the BIGGEST story. It would have been so easy for him to shrivel up and fade away.
