| Mariners Looking Forward to 2008 ... |
| That's because ownership announced Thursday it is bringing back Mike Hargrove next season. Good times. Reserve the A.L. West cellar right now. The absolute best part of the letter ownership sent to season-ticket holders is:
"Mike is uniquely equipped to lead a young team."
WHAT?? Ah, yeah, the guy who stuck with Carl Everett about three and half months too long; the guy who stunted the development of two young players (Jeremy Reed, Adam Jones) with his obsession with Willie Frickin' Bloomquist (who has nearly as man extra-base hits as some pitchers); the guy who stuck with the washed-up Joel Pineiro in the face of all evidence; the guy who said shuffling a morbid lineup in May would be sign of desperation only to do just that literally a few days later; the guy who watched his 22-year-old second baseman go from hitting nine homers in the first half to one in the second half; the guy who offered a new excuse for Felix Hernandez's troubles after each Felix start ... this guy is uniquely equipped to lead a young team?
That is ridiculous. I mean, if you want to bring the guy back, hey, fine, whatever. But blowing that kind of smoke is utter retardation.

| Cubs Burning Through Arms |
From the Cubs' Web Site: When Dusty Baker called on Jae-Kuk Ryu to pitch in the ninth inning of the Cubs' 14-6 win Tuesday over the Brewers, it marked the team's 522nd pitching change of the season. That's a Major League record. The previous mark was set by Felipe Alou's Giants in 2004.

| N.L. Central Blues |
It's too bad someone has to win the N.L. Central. The undeserving Reds are a game under .500 and the Astros are as boring as Barstow. The Cardinals are on the verge of a historic collapse and even if they hold on they'll end up collapsing in the playoffs, per usual. In one week, the Cardinals' seven-game leads is down to 1.5. How can you not root for the Cards to choke? That's just fun. The sad thing, there's no one too root for.

| Should the Twins Tank the Division Race? |
This article makes a good case that the Twins should try not to win the division so they can face the Yankees in the five-game series first round of the playoffs. The thinking being, it would be easier to beat the Yankees in five games, with Johan Santana pitching two of those games, than in seven games (if they faced them in the ALCS). I'm on board with that strategy. (But the whole "be careful what you wish for" thing kind of scares me.)

| Zambrano the Slugger |
| From the Cubs' Web Site:
Zambrano now has six home runs in 70 at-bats, and he ranks third in the National League behind sluggers Ryan Howard (9.52) and Albert Pujols (10.98) in terms of fewest at-bats per home run at 11.67.
