Wideouts in '06
Was submitting my '06 rankings for Mike Doria's upcoming article, and realized that at WR, for the first time in years, there's a changing of the guard at the top:

Here were my top-12:

  1. Steve Smith
  2. Torry Holt
  3. Anquan Boldin
  4. Larry Fitzgerald
  5. Chad Johnson
  6. Marvin Harrison
  7. Randy Moss
  8. Terrell Owens
  9. Chris Chambers
  10. Hines Ward
  11. Reggie Wayne
  12. Javon Walker

I have the perennial top-3, Harrison, Moss and Owens at 6-8.

Two interesting things to note: Boldin had over 1400 yards in just 14 games last year. And he and Fitzgerald (if they live up to projections) have to make the AZ quarterback a top-10 QB pick... if only Kurt Warner could stay healthy.

Re: Combine Rumors
I'd like to give Young the benefit of the doubt. Who knows what environmental factors (noise, room temperature, bad pencil) might have knocked him off his game. But a 6? That's too hard to explain away. Here is a good recap on the ins and out of the Wonderlic. Running backs apparently average the lowest, though still higher than warehouse workers.

Erik linked to the Wonderlic below, but the curious can go here and here to take sample tests.

NFL players get 12 minutes to answer 50 questions, a little more than 14 seconds per question, making finishing the test the hardest part, I would think. I gave myself 168 seconds for the 12-queston test and 100 seconds on the 7-question test. I actually missed one. But that's still better than Dan Marino, who reportedly scored a 14.

Texans ponder first pick trade
I have to think that the Texans are seriously considering this despite what a talent Reggie Bush can prove to be. Obviously the Texans are going to need more than Bush to fix their team, but if they can get a Herschel Walker type package for that pick, even if it's just draft picks and a player or two, I think it could really be a step in the right direction. Even if they just trade down in the first round this year and get another second or third rounder for the pick, I think it could help them. They've committed to Carr and have Andre Johnson, Dunta Robinson and when you look at their roster, running back is one of the places they're not too badly off in with Davis, Wells and even Morency (who was a stud at Okie State). Will Bush help this team that much, despite the kind of talent he is, or do the Texans trade down a stockpile. I think they should go with the latter and see if they can get some line help on both sides of the football.

Combine Rumors
Other sports have wild action at the trading deadline, and a hot stove that stays warm nearly year-round. Not so with football -- there, the only big rumor feeding frenzies involve the draft and the scouting combine... and in 2006, we have a doozy. Word on the street is that Vince Young scored a jaw-droppingly awful 6 (six) on his Wonderlic test. (The Wonderlic, for those who don't know, is essentially a scaled-down IQ test.) Teams put varying amounts of faith in the Wonderlic as a measuring stick, but you have to think -- if Young did indeed put up a score that ugly -- anyone who was planning on investing a top five pick in him, and building their offense around his ability to read defenses and make progressions for the next decade, might start to have second thoughts... especially with Jay Cutler's stock continuing to rise.
