Steelers will do well to limit Santonio's time behind the microphone
Let me start by saying that if and when Santonio Holmes catches his first touchdown pass, all will likely be forgiven in Steeler Nation (I prefer Steeler Country, but I am learning to adapt). In his first press briefing over the weekend, a defiant Holmes said Ben Roethlisberger never called him. "I didn't get any calls from him," Holmes told the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review. What? Roethlisberger said he left multiple messages for Holmes this summer. The least Holmes could have done is made something up to explain the situation, even if it wasn't true. I mean, this isn't really a big deal and it's more of a training camp story than anything else. But it makes you wonder if little things like this portend a continuing rocky ride for the rookie and his employers, the Steelers. Holmes also said he doesn't need to prove anything to the fans, and then said in the next sentence that he does need to prove himself. I don't know. Reports out of camp said he already has looked impressive in his short time at Latrobe. The Steelers haven't made any special provisions for Holmes or assigned a professional nanny to him, but after watching his first press conference, maybe they should. Frankly, I just don't know if the team knows how to handle its No. 1 pick at this point in time.

Do ESPN analysts do due diligence?
Or do they go off their gut? Today, on Sportcenter's "Fact or Fiction", Darren Woodson explained at the Bengals this year 1) depend on the health of Carson Palmer, 2) will be distracted by the offseason off-the-field issues, and 3) will have a worse defense this year than they had last year.

OK, point (1) is obvious and didn't require any analysis at all. Point (2) is tenuous, IMO, because most of those facing legal issues are not starters or core guys (Thurman, who will miss 4 games due to a drug test, is the only starter that has had any isssues. See recent "Criminal Element?" blog). I really doubt Chris Henry's status will have much affect, especially considering the Bengals depth at WR. And the other guys have never played or are just fighting for playing time.

And point (3)...Woodson could be right about the defense, anything is possible. But the Bengals have brought in 2 proven NFL vets at their 2 weakest positions (Adams at DT, Jackson at safety) while also getting arguably their best defensive player back that missed most of last season with injury (Williams, safety) and spending most of their draft picks this season on defense as well. If anything, the Bengals defense would be expected to be the most improved aspect of the squad...yet Woodson predicts them to be worse? I know Woodson is the former star defensive player and I'm not, but I wonder if he did the research and knows the moves that the Bengals have made, or if his entire analysis was just a surface probe and the rest was him just going off his "gut"...

Told You So
A little while back I blogged about schools banning childhood games like tag and touch football (TOUCH football!) and how it is turning us into a nation of sissies. Well, it's not just me saying it. Physcology Today deals with the same topic in a story fraught with dangerous implications, titled "A Nation of Wimps."

This part jumped out at me:

"[T]aking all the discomfort, disappointment and even the play out of development, especially while increasing pressure for success, turns out to be misguided by just about 180 degrees. With few challenges all their own, kids are unable to forge their creative adaptations to the normal vicissitudes of life. That not only makes them risk-averse, it makes them psychologically fragile, riddled with anxiety."

(A muchas gracias to The Corner for the heads up.)
